NOW THAT I’VE GOT YOUR ATTENTION ALIEN vs. PREDATOR NOW THAT I’VE GOT YOUR ATTENTION Animal Cell vs. Plant Cell

CELL The building block of life. The basic unit of all living organisms. From the Latin cellula meaning small room. Structure of cork - from which Robert Hooke coined the term “cell” in 1664.

THE ANIMAL CELL Mitochondria Nucleus Cell Membrane Ribosomes Vacuole Cytoplasm Vacuole

THE PLANT CELL Mitochondria Vacuole Ribosomes Chloroplast Cytoplasm Nucleus Cytoplasm Cell Membrane Cell Wall

4 Differences Between Animal and Plant Cells Animal cells have a larger nucleus. Plant cells have large central vacuoles for storage. Plant cells have an extra outer protective layer called the cell wall which gives the cell rigidity. Plant cells have chloroplasts which help the plant produce food during photosynthesis. They also contain a green pigment, chlorophyll, which gives plants and trees their color.

Main Parts of the Cell Nucleus - the “control center” of the cell. It contains the cell’s DNA. Cell Membrane - outer boundary of the cell. Cell Wall - Outer protective layer of plant cell. Cytoplasm - jelly-like fluid interior of the cell. Mitochondria - the “powerhouse” of the cell - energy center. Turns food into useable energy (ATP) Ribosomes - make protein Vacuoles - stores water; plants have a large central vacuole
