Student Finance Today’s situation

What expenses do students have? Tuition fees – paid to your University part paid by local authority Your contribution currently up to £3290 p.a. Less for a Foundation Degree Some degrees eg physio, charge no fees to students (NHS pays) Living expenses – accommodation, food, books, travel, clothing, entertainment

What help is available? Loans – need to be repaid tuition fee loan paid directly to University maintenance loan paid into student’s bank account each term Grants, Bursaries, Scholarships – don’t have to be repaid

And if I get a grant? Your maintenance loan is reduced accordingly The maximum (loan + grant) = £6 403 You must agree to share your household income details with your Uni when you apply for student finance!

What is a bursary? A Mandatory Bursary is a non-repayable cash award made by the University Based on family/household income (i.e. means-tested) Paid to students who are in receipt of the full Maintenance Grant. Minimum level set by Government but some HEIs may pay more.

Who can apply for a non-repayable NHS Bursary? doctor or dentist (during the latter stages of pre-registration training) chiropodist (including podiatrist), dietician, occupational therapist, orthoptist, physiotherapist, prosthetist and orthotist, radiographer, audiologist or speech and language therapist dental hygienist or dental therapist nurse or midwife (degree course) All the above are income-assessed; students also eligible for Student Loans nurse, midwife, or operating department practitioner (diploma course) – non-income assessed The NHS may also pay tuition fees for students who are eligible to apply for bursaries

Scholarships On Merit – based on A level results e.g. Cardiff Scholarships are worth £3,000. These cash payments are not means tested and available in many subjects. You need to gain grades AAA at A-level. For Tuition Fees – e.g. Northumbria pay this to all 'home' students who pay the full tuition fee: In Year 1, a non-repayable, non-means- tested award of up to £1,000 depending on course studied. From Year 2 onwards this scholarship will be awarded to students who score more than 60%. Subject-based – offered by professional bodies e.g. The Institution of Engineering and Technology Sport, music – at a number of Universities Check Uni websites for details!

Applying for Student Finance You should start filling out the forms online as soon as you have finished your UCAS form They are very slow to process them so make sure you are well ahead of deadline! Grants & Bursaries follow automatically provided you share details of your household income with your HEI cation/StudentFinance/DG_183342http:// cation/StudentFinance/DG_183342

Repaying Loans After graduation, when you are earning more than £ pa Deducted from salary 9% of your annual income over £15,000.
