Group 2: Context Within the mission of CRA, there are unmet needs in education. Problems to address: –Fluctuation in enrollments over time –Continued lack of diversity, size, and quality in undergraduate education impacting research quality. –We don’t know answers to important questions like leakpoints and overall quality. –There is an opportunity for us to compete for the best and brightest American PhD students The “person on the street” does not understand the value of a computing education or the value of computing research. –Difficulty to express idealistic vision(s) as a field, and the excitement is not distributing down well –Not good at explaining what a degree in computer science means o CRA’s investment in CCC and NSF’s requirement of an educational component require an engagement education

Agreed upon points CRA should not duplicate current active efforts (like accreditation) but further coordination could be useful. Industry has demands that cannot be met currently It is within the mission of CRA to address this context and to do so will require organizational enhancement. –Other STEM fields have made effective changes to improve in these same dimensions The solution to the enrollment problem is multi-faceted. –Curriculum changes are one aspect of this –The pipeline for our research programs is long and starts with K- 12 students and parents

Beyond CRA-E CRA does not have the resources to create an independent entity such as an ASCE, but would be able to support an entity similar to CRA-W This could be the right time for the exploration of possible formation of an ASCE –Some of the things that ASCE could bring to the table are: An educational component at the K-12 level Influencing the computing education of college-bound high school students Influencing not just what but also how education takes place across the spectrum of computing education –CRA-E could be ASCE for member institutions A model to expand later

Recommendations to CRA Create a subcommittee modeled on CRA-W or CDC Possible Roles: –CRA should make an attempt to bring all the players together to consider building an umbrella organization (a la ASEE and/or NCWIT) –Gather innovations from its member institutions which includes corporations and disseminate them, perhaps through existing channels like SIGCSE and FIE –Focus on graduate and undergraduate education at levels beyond curricular foci (e.g. conveying excitement of computing, etc) –Measure the educational enterprise among member institutions
