RESEARCH EDUCATION OUTCOME AND CAPABILITIES Results of groupwork, point 5 on the agenda

Capabilities of a PhD Graduate (gr 1) To attract competitive research funding Ability to supervise research project (PI) Ability to publish in peer reviewed journals Make positive impact in his/her profession Ability to accomplish study on time

Characteristics of High Quality PhD (gr 1) Significant contribution to existing body of knowledge Contribution to solving existing problem in the society Rigorous peer review throughout the process No negative impact to the society

Outcome of a PhD degree for the student (Group 2) – Academic qualifications of the highest degree Eligibility for supervision of higher degrees – Research expertise – Enhanced in confidence in teaching and supervision of students – It is a criteria for promotion to become a professor except for Medical doctors (can be promoted after super specialization and experience)

What can they do (gr 2) Teaching Research Supervise students/ Manage projects Consultancy Lead institutions/colleges/departments

Characteristics of high quality PhD project (gr 2) It should address a clear research question(s) The objectives should be SMART – Specific – Measurable – Attainable – Relevant – Time bound It should be of high public/scientific interest

Quality of PhD (gr 2) 1.Qn1 – Not necessarily – Disagree Qn2..Agree.... How? Qn3...Project should be SMART Qn4.. – Supervisor and student have good skills and working relationship...working towards a common goal – Not necessary....both student and supervisor are required

Outcome of a PhD degree for the student (gr 3) 1.To be able to initiate & conduct independent high quality research 2.To be able to teach/supervise/synthesize/disseminate research findings (future students) 3.To enhance ones career in a particular field

Important characteristics of a high quality PhD project (gr 3) 1.Contribution of new knowledge to fill the research gap 2.Must be feasible (implementation, content & duration) 3.Must have enough funding

Outcome of PhD degree (gr 4) Ability to develop and conduct research Ability to mentor others Foster independent thinking, confidence and creativity Knowledgeable and competent in the field Research work should provide answer to specific country need Contribute to science, policy and practice

Characteristics of a high quality PhD project (gr 4) There should be an innovation in it (a model, idea, an intervention, program) Have a clear contribution to science (publications, formula, product) Have clear contribution to community through policy, program, practice, development, review, or policy change Lead to further research and attract more funds
