Plants

Plant Needs Sun Air Rain soil Different kinds of plants need different amounts of these things.

Plant Parts Leaves Stem Roots Take in the air and light Carries water from roots to other parts of plants and supports plant above ground. Roots Hold a plant in the ground. They take in water and minerals from the soil.

Leaf Shapes Wide and flat - maple and oak tree Small and thick - jade plant Smooth or rough edges Star-shaped - sweet gum Fan shaped - ginkgo plant

Growing Plants From Seeds What Seeds Are

Seed: first stage in the growth of many plants Seeds come in many different sizes and colors and can even be striped. However, all seeds become plants that look like the plants they came from.

What Seeds Need All seeds need water to grow. This plant has germinated (small plant breaks out of the seed) Root grows from it Next, the seed breaks open and a young plant or seedling appears

Some Plants Make Seeds Plants that reproduce by seeds usually form more than one seed at a time. 2 Groups of plants form seeds: Flowers – grow on bushes, trees or on small plants Cones – evergreen trees (pine trees & spruce trees) Cones have hard scales that protect the seeds under them.

Some plants can be grown from other plant parts: Leaf or piece of a stem – placed in water may form roots Cutting- piece of leaf or stem used to grow new plant Tubers and bulbs – underground plant parts also can grow new plants Dandelions: form many seeds easily blown by wind Bulb – part of stem (this flower grows from bulbs) http://69.90.174.248/photos/thumb_small/85891/85891,1204470884,6.jpg Seeds in watermelon are protected by its fruit.

Seed Parts Seed coat : Protects young plant inside the seed Stored Food: Used by young plant to grow when seed sprouts Seeds are like packages with tiny plant inside. The “package” is wrapped by the seed coat. Inside the seed coat is a seedling and food for the seedling. Seedling: lives inside every seed

How Seeds Are Spread Shot out of the adult plant like cannonballs from a cannon After seeds were shout out Before seeds shout out http://waddell.ci.manchester.ct.us/garden_images/id_witch-hazel-seed-old.jpeg http://waddell.ci.manchester.ct.us/garden_images/id_witch-hazel-seed.jpeg Animals or people Air http://69.90.174.248/photos/thumb_small/85891/85891,1204470884,6.jpg Water Cockleburs catch a ride on a shoe Birds & other animals eat berries , the seeds pass through their digestive systems and are dropped onto the ground far from plant they came from. http://www.mongabay.com/thumbnails/indonesia/sulawesi/sulawesi7520.JPG

How Plants Make Food Plants can make their own food, unlike people or other animals. Photosynthesis: food making process Chlorophyll: green color on plant – chlorophyll helps the plant use energy from the sun to make food.

Photosynthesis Water & carbon dioxide combine inside a plant to make food. (a type of sugar) Sunlight provides the energy needed for food to be made. Plants also make oxygen during photosynthesis. Oxygen is given off through plants leaves.

How Plants Use Food To grow larger To make seeds Store in stems & roots to be used later Store sugar in fruits Stems, leaves, roots, seeds, fruits and even flowers of plants are used as food by people and other animals.
