6 OpenCourseWare Secondary Education OCW SE — Pilot Course selection RationalePossible Complications Introductory Biology AP Biology curriculum under revision, so focus on introductory course is more feasible Clear linkages to mathematics or Computer Science courses Biological Engineering Applications All students required to take Intro Biology, not so with AP class Content of 9 th grade biology varies from school to school, Content of Introductory Biology varies depending on whether taught in 9 th grade vs. 11 th. Trigonometry Less effort has been put into creating revised Trigonometry curricula than Calculus – greater opportunity to make impact Numerous Engineering Applications that feature Trigonometry Scope of the curriculum is better defined than biology or chemistry Different schools spend widely varying amounts of time on Trigonometry Trigonometry is often taught alongside Geometry, or as part of pre-calc – but usually not by itself, as a full year course Computer Science MIT has a unique teaching philosophy for Computer Science A course between 1.00 and might be valuable and unique Computer Science is not offered by many schools, and for those who do, often the only option is AP curriculum Many schools may not have teachers capable of teaching the course MIT approach may be too theoretical – material seen as not “practical” enough More difficult to find qualified teachers for pilot than other subjects Chemistry Chemical Engineering applications Hands on labs straightforward to create MIT Intro Chemistry has only optional labs – limited source of hands on activities AP Curricula is also under revision

7 OpenCourseWare Secondary Education OCW SE — Web site components Course Units Student Tutorials (Lab Techniques, Mathlab tutorials, etc) Lessons (Components of a lesson on the next slide) Learning Objectives (Course Level) Subject Matter information for teachers (links to MIT OCW, books, etc.) Career Links (Information about particular careers related to the course, videos of young scientists, etc) Subject Matter News (research updates, RSS feeds, podcasts, etc) Teacher Community Space

Labs (Lab Manuals, Techniques, Equipment Lists). Will include different labs for different student learning styles, and using varying levels of equipment Readings Multimedia Extensions (Extra materials for interested students: applications, links to advanced articles, after school activities, extended projects, etc) Learning Objectives (Lesson Level) Content Links to National, State Standards Assessments (pre and post lesson, traditional and alternative, sample exams) Simulations (Java applets, Virtual Labs, etc) Lesson Problem sets, sample homework assignments OCW SE — Web site components Sequence (How this lesson fit might fit into a thematic sequence of concepts) Discussion questions, group activities, reading and writing tasks Teaching tips, information on common student misconceptions regarding the concept, with relevant bridging techniques Video
