Basic Rules of the Game Everyone begins on start –You can’t go back past start At the beginning of each turn, every player rolls the dice Follow the instructions on the slide Record notes on proper interview techniques based on each turn Winners who reach the You’re Hired space (or progress the furthest) will receive 2 bonus participation points

Before the Interview If you rolled a …… 1 – Move 2 spaces. You are well prepared 2 or 3 – Move 1 space. You are ready, but stayed up late watch reruns of Survivor Cleveland 4 or 5 or 6 – Stay where you are because you didn’t prepare at all and you have 10 minutes to make it downtown

Before the Interview Research the company Practice interviewing with a friend Prepare 3 questions to ask about the job/company Make sure your clothes are clean and appropriate Know where you are going

Appearance Does Matter If you rolled a …………. 1 or 2 – Stay where you are. Did you sleep in those clothes? 3, 4, or 5 – Move ahead 1 space. You piercings are off putting 6 – Move 2 spaces. You are neat and professional

Getting to the Interview If you rolled a ………. 1 or 6 – Move ahead one space. You arrived 15 minutes early, but you look a but rushed 2 or 4 – Stay where you are. The administrative assistant is not a date prospect or your servant 3 or 5 – Move ahead two spaces. You are refreshed and ready to go!

Getting to the Interview Rehearse your route Call to reschedule as soon as possible Arrive 15 minutes early Check yourself in the restroom Review your materials Be respectful and courteous to the “gate keeper”

Other First Impressions If you rolled a ……… 1 or 2 – Move ahead 1 space. Nice firm handshake, but limited eye contact 3 – Move ahead 2 spaces. You seem confident and happy to be there 4, 5 or 6 – Stay where you are. Was that a limp fish?

The Interview Opening If you rolled a ……….. 1 or 2 – Stay where you are. You prattled on about over sleeping 3, 4 or 6 – Move ahead 1 space. Your 60 second infomercial was uninspiring 5 – Move ahead 2 spaces. You’ve piqued their interest

The Interview Opening Be prepared to engage in limited small talk Deliver your 60 sec. infomercial with poise and confidence Be prepared to mention some facts about the company Keep the focus on how you can help the company

Responding to Questions If you rolled a ……… 1 or 2 – Move ahead 2 spaces. You answers were direct, brief and clear 3 or 4 – Stay where you are. Did you listen to the question? 5 or 6 – Move ahead 1 space. Your answers were fine, but uninspiring

Responding to Questions Take a moment to formulate your answers Be brief, but complete Provide concrete examples that demonstrate your skills Focus on the company When asked about a challenge or weakness – be honest and describe the steps you have taken to remedy the problem

Interview Don’ts If you rolled a……. 1 or 2 – Go back 1 space. Are you chewing gum? 3 or 4 – Go back 2 spaces. Is that your cell phone ringing? 5 or 6 – Go back 3 spaces. Did you actually answer your phone?

Asking Questions Prepare at least three questions to ask Bring your research into your questions Show you are thinking about your future Ask for clarification about something already discussed

Illegal Questions If you rolled a ………. 1, 2 or 3 – Move ahead 2 spaces. You deflected the question well 4 or 5 – Move ahead 1 space. You were flustered, but did fine. 6 – Stay where you are. Watch your temper!

Illegal Questions Illegal questions are discriminatory –Age, gender, church affiliation, marriage, children, etc. You don’t have to answer Ask how it pertains to the job Answer the question directly If those questions are asked; do you really want to work there?

After the Interview If you rolled a ………. 1 or 2. Stay where you are. Interview, what interview? 3, 5 or 6 – Move ahead one space. They got your . 4 – Move ahead 2 spaces. Your thank you note was well written and they will be calling later this week

After the Interview Write and send a thank you note within 48 hours of the interview You can type, hand write or your thanks Directly reference items you discussed Include an action statement
