 We believe discipline should be considered as opportunities for personal growth.  We believe that students should be responsible for solving their own problems with adult guidance.  We believe that preserving and/or enhancing a student’s self-respect and dignity is crucial to a successful disciplinary action.  We believe in natural consequences for the action.  We believe in a fluid clip chart system with communication home daily in student planners.

 Conference period: 12:45-1:35, by appointment  Parent Conferences will be October 12 th (Please see Sign-Up Genius)  Weekly Newsletter  Remind 101- 

 Your child will have a binder sent home to be returned daily with planners inside  Serene Hills Teacher web pages are available for viewing. Enjoy our websites and check often for good information!  Message in a bottle 

Planners

 All subject areas taught in Kindergarten are aligned with the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills).  Math is taught with hands on activities and manipulatives, using Texas Go Math curriculum.  We use district adopted curriculum, supplemental materials and teacher created materials.

 Please see the handout for correct letter formation  Music, P.E., and Art are taught by teachers with specialized training in those areas.  Science, Social Studies and Computer Technology are taught by the classroom teacher and all subject areas are integrated continually.

 Targeted instruction is a method of assessment and instruction based on individual needs  Students will receive small group instruction to fill academic gaps and enrich learning

 Good attendance is important for many reasons. Your child receives the maximum benefit of education by being in school every day, and numerous studies show a strong link between academic performance and consistent attendance. Because attendance is so critical for the quality of your child's education, Texas has a Compulsory Attendance Law.

 School district policy states, “If a student fails to attend school without excuse on 10 or more days or parts of days within a six-month period in the same school year, the District shall file a complaint against the student’s parent in a county, justice or municipal court for an offense under Education Code ” Please be aware that vacations are NOT excused absences.

Attendance  If your child is absent, please send an or note to myself.

 Please read with your child at least TEN minutes daily and fill in their Reading Log  Practice sight words at home (Fry Words)  Spot Light Reader

 Children must travel on the bus to and from the school.  Parents must pay separately when attending the field trip, and because of space, will not be able to ride the school bus.  If a parent is a chaperone, we ask that you do not bring siblings.  There will be a field trip chaperone form needed for you to attend as a chaperone.  Make sure your child brings a disposable lunch.  Please pay a one time fee of $12 to cover the cost of the field trips this year. Pay by October 1 st.

 T-shirts have already been ordered for Kindergarten.  Teachers keep the t-shirts in the classroom during the year.  T-shirts are $8.00.  Please check the list to see if you still need to pay for our class t-shirt.

 Quarterly reports will be given  Conferencing will occur on an as-needed basis, as well as October 12 th

1= Skill/Concept: Exhibits with direct assistance 2= Skill/Concept: Exhibits with minimal guidance 3= Skill/Concept: Exhibits mastery at expected level It is important to note that for each indicator on the report card, it is the Level 3 that is the goal and indicates “end- of -year” mastery for that concept or skill. Criteria for performance Levels: ● Level score indicates performance for time frame of specified marking period ● Goal is Level 3 for each marking period Kindergarten Criteria:

Kindergarten is assessed using I-station Reading ● Students served in the bilingual program are assessed using I-station en Español. The assessment screens a child at the beginning, middle (if needed), and end of the year. ● Your child’s teacher will report a “yes” or “no” on the report card for your child having “Met Standard on Early Reading Assessment.”

● The report card is one tool for communication between home and school. ● Students receive a report card four times a year. ● Only the envelope needs to be returned. ● The report card is for you to keep. ● It is necessary that you sign the envelope and return it within a week. ● The report card includes a comment box where your child’s teacher includes additional information and/or requests a conference. ● You also are invited to enter comments. You’ll notice the signature box on the envelope includes a place for you to enclose comments about the grading period or request a conference.

 Please fill out a change of request form online if your child is going home a different way permentantly.  No guest riders on the bus.

 You can pay for your child’s lunch account online.  Please check menu online

 Each day we have a snack time. We do not have a classroom snack supply, so please send a healthy substantial snack with your child each day. Please let me know if you have any concerns about this or questions about what types of snacks are allowed.  This is a NO peanut classroom.

 PTO provides materials and opportunities for our school that we otherwise would not have.  Please get involved by visiting the PTO page through the SHE website.  Each kindergarten class will have a room parent who helps facilitate special events and is a liaison between classroom and PTO.  Please sign up tonight for volunteer opportunities.

Back to School Family Picnic Thursday, September 17, :30- 7:30 If you wish to purchase dinners, return an order form, with payment to your teacher or the front office by 9/11/15. You can bring your own food and enjoy the fun!! Dinners must be preordered and cannot be purchased at the event. Questions? Contact Roxi Tsakas-

The last Friday of each month birthdays are celebrated. You may bring a special treat to share with the class. I will send home a reminder and encourage you to communicate with the other parents that month to arrange treats. We are only allowed ONE sweet treat.
