Medical Marijuana on Martha’s Vineyard What is the role of The Dukes County Health Council? By Susan Sanford

What is the role of the DCHC? How do we apply the Dukes County Health Council’s mission and vision statement to the topic of medical marijuana?

Vision Statement VISION STATEMENT: Our vision is a healthy community with seamless, complementary, coordinated and accessible health and wellness services for the residents of Martha’s Vineyard.

Mission Statement MISSION: The Dukes County Health Council is a coalition of community members, public officials, health practitioners, and health organizations working together to promote community-wide health and wellness.

Some thoughts regarding the DCHC’s role on the topic of medical marijuana: The DCHC is a forum for sharing and collaborating information regarding healthcare issues specific to MV. Explore questions specific to Martha’s Vineyard. DCHC is a liaison between towns Dept of Health personal, healthcare agencies, physicians and the community.

Some potential questions for discussion: How will Dept of Public Health personnel in each MV town become educated on the state's medical marijuana regulations? Is the DCHC the appropriate entity to facilitate or assist with this educational process? How are other towns in MA getting educated on medical marijuana regulations? Ferry/boat/air transportation policies with medical marijuana? What about small business employers that have a drug free policy and employ a medical marijuana patient?

Whose job is it? Gather information on MA regulations when released by MADPH. Explore specific questions regarding public health policy, medical marijuana and MV. Collaborate with towns DPH regarding current regulations set by MADPH. Establish/collaborate a plan for local DPH education. Create a plan for ongoing communication, collaboration.
