National Chi Nan University Introduction As the power consumption issue is getting important, wise power control system is needed. Smart Grid: A smart, self-healing electric power system. [1] Smart Grid[1] Despite of the development of Smart Grid, there lacks a general mechanism. We utilize SIP and SNMP as management mechanisms in Smart Grid. 3

National Chi Nan University Introduction Cont. Most of managing interfaces are still proprietary.[2][2] As Smart Grid becomes an important issue, we need a efficient and general solution.[3][3] SNMP has been widely used in network management, SIP is newbie in this field, however, some people take SIP as the clear choice for Smart Grid communication.[4][4] 4

National Chi Nan University Introduction Cont. NAT is the issue in the remote management. [5][5] – SNMP has no register, hence, SNMP request will be blocked by NAT if SNMP server is in remote network. – SIP provides register, thus, end-devices register to the remote SIP proxy server and user agent can send request to end-devices via SIP proxy server. 5

National Chi Nan University Introduction Cont. Smart Grid management is a new field to SNMP and SIP, evaluate the advantage and disadvantage of these two management mechanisms are needed. 6

National Chi Nan University Background Knowledge Internet Protocol – IPv4 – Ipv6 Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) 7

National Chi Nan University Background Knowledge Cont. SNMP – Management Information Base (MIB) – Object Identifier (OID) Ex: sysUptime: SIP – Instant Message ( SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions, SIMPLE) 8

National Chi Nan University Related Work Cont. Key Words: Smart Grid, Home Automation 12

National Chi Nan University System Architecture Smart Grid is two-way communication between the consumers and suppliers, in order to achieve two-way communication, this thesis design a small Smart Grid. Consumers is available to communicate end- devices with mobile devices, and end-devices send back information to consumers or suppliers for analysis. 13

National Chi Nan University System Architecture Cont. 14 We porting SIP and SNMP onto end-devices, design several events that will be used in Smart Grid network management. Evaluate the performances of two protocols and analyze the differences between two different protocols. In this thesis provides the evidences of network management in Smart Grid.

National Chi Nan University System Architecture Cont. 15

National Chi Nan University Implementation DMA-2440L Platform Porting – Samsung ARM9 Series, S3C2440 Processor – Kernel: Linux Enable IPv6: #make menuconfig – File System: Cramfs Using Busybox builds Cramfs file system – Cross compile: Using cross compiler cross compiles the libraries and programs, including SIP and SNMP. 16

National Chi Nan University Implementation Cont. 17 SNMP Client TCP IPv6 IEEE Ethernet Interface SNMP Server TCP IPv6 IEEE Ethernet Interface DMA-2440L Linux Kernel Linux Kernel PC

National Chi Nan University Implementation Cont. 18 SIP Agent TCP IPv6 IEEE Ethernet Interface SIP Agent TCP IPv6 IEEE Ethernet Interface DMA-2440L Linux Kernel Linux Kernel PC / Mobile Device

National Chi Nan University Experiment SNMP and SIP can do the same things – Uptime – MAC – System Description Evaluate the performance of packets transmission – Limited time: Evaluate how much requests of SIP and SNMP can be sent in limited time. 19

National Chi Nan University Experiment Results SNMP – Advantage: Small packet size – Disadvantages: Hard to read OID, NAT traversal SIP – Advantages: Easy to read contents message, no NAT traversal problem, better scalability – Disadvantages: Heavy packet size 20

National Chi Nan University Experiment Results Cont. SNMPSIP Limited Time 21

National Chi Nan University Conclusion Despite the rapid growth of Smart Grid, without a general management mechanism slows down the development. Both SNMP and SIP are mature protocols in their original design concept. In this thesis introduces two feasible mechanisms in Smart Grid management. 22

National Chi Nan University Conclusion Cont. In the last part of this research, providing the following information – Evaluation of performance – Advantage – Disadvantage 23

National Chi Nan University Future Work Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) support – SIP is available – SNMP is unavailable Compression the heavy header of SIP will provide an efficient mechanism. 24

National Chi Nan University Smart Grid Like the power grid, the smart grid also delivers electricity from suppliers to consumers. However, it uses two–way digital technology to support communication between consumers and suppliers. It combines power systems, telecommunications, smart energy devices, information technology, and digital control. 26
