March, 2014

 Do I have to have Spanish to graduate High School?  ANSWER: NO! BUT if you are attending a 4 year college or University you will not be accepted without passing two years of the same Foreign Language  Tech Schools, Military, 2 Year Colleges: NO! You do not have to have a Foreign Language to be accepted to these schools/career.  *TO BE 100% SURE YOU NEED TO CHECK WITH THE INSTITUTION YOU ARE INTERESTED IN*

 Does Intro To Healthcare count as a 4 th Science?  ANSWER: YES for graduation purposes from high school, BUT…………………….  If you are attending a 4 year college/University they WILL NOT ACCEPT IT AS A 4 th SCIENCE  If you are attending a 2 year college, technical school, or Military Intro to Healthcare will qualify as a 4 th Science  *TO BE 100% SURE YOU NEED TO CHECK WITH THE INSTITUTION YOU ARE INTERSTED IN*

 Does Plant Science count as a 4 th Science?  ANSWER: YES…………no matter what path you choose after high school Plant Science is accepted as a 4 th Science

 How do I get into 12 For Life?  Bottom line is you need to see Mrs. Farrell in the cafeteria during lunch and tell her you are interested in the program.  All 12 For Life employees are subject to random drug testing, and you must have a parent/guardian attend the interview process with you.  New employees are hired in August and in January each school year

 What are the options at 12 For Life?  ANSWER: There are 2 options  1.) You can attend ½ a day. You will attend 1 st and 2 nd block here at HHS and then you will be transported to and from Carrollton on a Heard County School Bus  2.) You can attend all day (This is known as STEM students) These students attend school at Southwire all day long

 How do I sign up for Welding, Cosmetology, or Nursing at West GA Tech?  ANSWER: 3 steps  1.) Pass the COMPASS test (to sign up for this test you need to see Mrs. Farrell) HHS offers this test free of charge twice a year (we have already offered it twice this year)  2.) You must be 16 before the beginning of the semester you intend to start these classes  3.) You must apply and get all of the proper paperwork filled out ON TIME (see Mrs. Farrell for paperwork and details)

 How do I become an Honor Graduate? (FOR CURRENT SENIORS YOU JUST NEED 5 HONORS CLASSES AND A 90 GPA)  FOR CURRENT 9 th, 10 th, and 11 th GRADERS:  8 Honors Classes must be passed (at least 1 of those has to be during your JR year and 1 of those has to be during your SR year)  Maintain a cumulative GPA of 90 or higher (there is NO ROUNDING UP WHEN IT COMES TO THIS)

 What did we just do in the commons area?  You have not signed up for any classes! Your teachers simply gave us their recommendations for your classes next year  You and your parents will have an opportunity to sit down with us and actually register in the coming weeks  CURRENT JRS: March 10 – 13 th  CURRENT SOPHS: March 17 – 21 st  CURRENT FRESH: March 24 – 28  IF YOUR PARENTS DON’T COME WE DON’T REGISTER YOU

 If I sign up for an AP course can I drop it later?  All of this will be explained at a MANDATORY AP Night coming up in May. If you sign up for an AP Course you must attend this meeting in May.

 What AP Courses does HHS offer?  In English: AP Language and AP Literature  In Math: AP Calculus  In Science: AP Biology (beginning next year for Freshmen)  In Social Studies: AP US History and AP Microeconomics (AP Government is a possibility very soon)  In Foreign Language: AP Spanish Language

 What are AP Classes?  They are “Advanced Placement” classes  They are taught at a much more demanding level than your regular classes  The teachers will discuss expectations of their AP Classes if you go by and ask them!  AP Language: Brad McLain  AP Literature: Shannon Perry  AP Spanish Language: Tammy Garces  AP Calculus: Chuck Tatom  AP US History: Lance Taylor  AP Microeconomics: Paul Mixon  AP Biology: Anna Wilborn  AP Government: Currently not offered (Thomas Sickman)

 There are VERY FEW STUDENTS who can honestly handle more than 2 AP Courses  With the classes being taught at a much more demanding level you will have a hard time managing 3 or more of these courses  These courses ARE ALWAYS TAUGHT IN THE SPRING SEMESTER. (AP Tests are always given in May)

 What is the deal with AP Calculus? -Accelerated Algebra -Accelerated Geometry -Accelerated Advanced Algebra ONCE YOU HAVE TAKEN THESE COURSES WE HAVE NOTHING ELSE TO OFFER YOU EXCEPT THE FOLLOWING SEQUENCE AT HHS: ANALYSIS/AP CALCULUS *The other option you have is to dual enroll at a local college and take a College Algebra which will count as your 4 th Math course toward graduation requirements*

 Do I have to complete a Pathway in CTAE to graduate high school?  ANSWER: NO We will encourage you to find something you like and stick to it so you are not just out there “taking classes”. We have many Pathways to choose from

 Culinary Arts (Chef Tillman)  Digital Technology/Webpage (Mrs. Thompson)  Nursing (Mrs. Thaxton)  Automotive (Mr. Mock)  Construction (Mr. Long)  Agriculture (Mr. McWhorter)  Visual Art (Mr. Hunt)  Foreign Language (Mrs. Garces and Mr. Burson)  Band (Mr. Tyson)  Chorus (Mr. Tyson)

 How many credits do I need to graduate?  26 Credits are required  4 in English  4 in Math  4 in Science  4 in Social Studies  1 in Personal Fitness/Health  3 credits in any combination from the following: CTAE/Fine Arts/Foreign Language  6 Electives

 This is a common questions that we, as administrators and counselors, have for you!  Why do you come in to register and have no idea what courses you want to take????  In order for us to put you in the proper classes you have to have a plan (or at least an idea of what you want to do when you finish high school)
