Observations and Interviews  Think - What was particularly interesting, enlightening, confusing, perplexing, surprising, exciting, etc. about your observations of and interview with the reference librarian?  Pair - compare notes: highlight four items of interest to discuss  Share - share two items of interest from pair

Videos  Does this Completely Answer Your Question?  Discuss  What makes for a “good” reference question?  What does the reference librarian need to know to best answer the question being asked?  The Difficult Reference Question

Resource Presentations  Resource Presentations/Lessons (pairs)  What do we need to know about the reference type selected?  Which are the best of this type? How does one select the best?  How do you use this reference source? (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced use)  Present in class - approx. 20 minutes  Presentation should be interactive/hands-on  Bring examples (if possible)  Outlines of Presentations due CLASS THREE  Groups 1 and 2 will PRESENT at Class Three!  Each pair must schedule meeting with me before Class 3 to discuss progress on presentations - Should be done in AETZone

Writing Reference Questions  Five groups of 3  Part I  Using Reference Source provided, generate a “good” reference question using that source  Write answers ON SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER!

Activity Continued…  Groups stay the same  Part II  Rotate questions and sources  Using reference source, try to answer the reference question  Note problems and challenges with the questions as written; make suggestions for improving the questions  Write your answers and notes on separate sheet of paper  Rotate questions and sources; repeat for next question (total three times)  Part III  Discuss

Search and Discuss Questions  Choose Topic  Develop 3 reference questions for EACH SOURCE GROUPING (1-6)  (18 total)  Each question should use a DIFFERENT source  All questions and source lists are to be posted to course Wiki by next class  me the questions and answers  p/Main_Page p/Main_Page p/Main_Page

TIP: Once groups have developed their 18 questions, students should try Googling each of the questions to ensure that the questions aren’t so easy that Googling would be the best way to answer them.

Team will conduct a RAP session (reference interview) with the faculty member to identify an information need that she or he has related to her or his current course load.

Virtual Reference Team Project  Team will identify way(s) in which they can respond to this/these information needs by working directly with either that faculty member or with her/his students.  Each team member will use the Reference Log (provided in class) to log their time and their blogs to reflect on this experience.  Teams will share their team projects during the final class meeting.
