The Internet When was it created and why?

What Is the Internet? A network of computer networks. It connects networks all over the world through the use of high-speed data lines.

The INTERNET Often called the NET, the Information Super Highway, or Cyberspace Made up of connected networks around the world for the purpose of sharing information (a network of networks) Each government, company and organization on the NET is responsible for maintaining its own network

Who made it, when and why? The US Department of Defense created the first part of the Internet in the late 60’s. ARPAnet was created to enhance national security in case of a nuclear attack or natural disaster. It was designed so that information could still flow around the country even if half of the network were destroyed.

INTERNET beginnings National Science Foundation created NSFNET in the 80’s. It allowed schools and universities to network similar to ARPANET

INTERNET beginnings 1980’s PUBLIC ACCESS consisted of scientists and researchers with modems on their home computers. Early 1990’S WORLD WIDE WEB created by the European Laboratory for Particle Physics with public access in 1993

INTERNET beginnings By the mid 1990’s, over 30 million people had access to the NET Most big companies created their own web sites to sell or provide product information.

What is a Browser? A browser is a software package used to access locations on the World Wide Web, part of the global network called the internet. Many browsers contain software. They enable computers to locate, download, and display documents containing text, sound, graphics, animation, and photographs located on computer networks. Ex. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, Netscape

What was the first browser? Mosaic, it was released in February, The first browser to display text and graphics.

Features of Mosaic It provided support for graphics, sound, and video clips. Innovations with the use of bookmarks and history files were added. Mosaic was not developed after January 1997 because Netscape and Microsoft started to create their own browsers.

UPS & DOWNS When you receive information from another computer on the network - you are downloading When you send information to another computer on the network- you are uploading.

What does http stand for? Hypertext Transfer Protocol, the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web. HTTP defines how messages are forma t ted and transmitted.

DSL stands for " Digital Subscriber Line " A broadband technology that uses telephone lines and digital coding to create a connection to the internet from your computer. That link can carry vast amounts of voice, video and data information at very high speeds.

DSL service providers use the same copper-based lines that let you make and receive telephone calls DSL is also called an always on connection because it uses existing 2-wire copper telephone line connected to the premise and will not tie up your phone as a dial-up connection does.

DSL technology can deliver data at speeds ranging from 144 Kbps to 3 Mbps. Typical user experience 1.5 Mbps That's from 300 times faster than the standard dial-up connection speed of 28.8 to 56 kbps.

A "Cable Modem" is a device that allows high- speed data access (such as to the Internet) via a cable TV network. Ex. Roadrunner and Time Warner partnership

Which is better DSL or Cable? ServiceInstallationAvg mo. Fee Max Download Speed Max upload speed DSL$ $ Mbps 384 Kbps Cable$0 -100$45 2 Mbps 384 Kbps

INTERNET ownership No one organization owns or controls the Internet. There is no government regulation No one censors the information on the NET

Any always-on Internet connection with a static IP address is vulnerable to hacker attacks. How do you protect your computer? Turn it off Turn off your DSL or Cable modem (if OK with your provider) Have an anti-virus program running at all times Install personal firewall software Ask you provider to equip you with a dynamic IP address

Internet updates…. HIGH SPEED Live cam’s Internet through the television Virtual Reality - 3D wireless Scanners - photographs

INTERNET access By 2007, it is estimated that EVERYONE in the world will have access to the Internet
