Agenda Invention of the Internet Variation Newly coined Acronym Origin of GG Online game: Blizzard Warcraft Birth of GG

Invention of the Internet 1960 US Department of Defense 1970 developed into 2 branches Military use Public use  The Internet started to become a way of communication for average people

Other new words

Invention of the Internet Influence on communication and language: no face to face  Communication based mostly on text  Words are shortened to speed up the conversation Establishment of new kinds of websites and programs  New word coined

New words “Tweetup,” a combo-term for ‘twitt + meet up,’ used to describe meeting arranged through Twitter. OED: (also twitter) a message sent using the Twitter social networking service

“De-friend,” the act of removing someone from your friend’s list(same as unfriend)

“Chillax” to tell somebody to chill and relax at the same time

Paywall -- a way of blocking access to a part of a website which is only available to paying subscribers

Acronym TMI – too much information IMHO – in my humble opinion OMG – Oh my God FYI - for your information BFF – be friend forever

What we found out Graeme Diamond, chief editor of new words for the Oxford dictionary “in usage for a decent length of time” “The word is used and understood by a wide audience“ Language change Not just “teenagers’ expression” anymore but a word in dictionary

From Communication to Entertainment In addition to just communicate, people also started to entertain themselves  Online Games Blizzard core value : “Play Nice, Play Fair” “Every voice matters ” The design of the games  Cooperation  No sweat no gain (instead of money)  No bully  Willing to compliment others and acted nicely “Good Game”

Blizzard – WarCraft Cooperation with teammates Destroy the enemy’s castle You Win

Birth of GG Players are forced to close the window as soon as the castle is down Only in the window can you talk with your teammates In order to compliment quickly Good game is shortened into GG Misunderstanding between Mandarin-speaking players  I am doomed  我 gg 了 (I am done.)

Conclusion The cause of language is communication Communication is needed because people need to cooperate to produce and to live better New kinds of production  such as the InternetLanguage changes
