Middle School Options

 Math  Science  Social Studies  English  Reading  PE / Athletics  1 semester of Computer Technology  1 ½ electives

 Math  Science  Social Studies  English  Reading  1 semester of PE / Athletics  1 semester of Computer Technology  2 electives

 Athletics (8 th grade)  Band  Choir  Orchestra  Art  Theater Arts  Career and Technical Education ◦ Exploring Careers ◦ Family Consumer Science ◦ STEM  Spanish Language Appreciation, Spanish, and Spanish for Spanish Speakers (BMSN )  Student Aide  Yearbook

 In 2010, before the first group of Dual Language students moved to middle school, a Dual Language Transition Committee met to make program recommendations.  The committee included parents, teachers, and administrators from elementary, middle school, and high school levels.

 This committee recommended creating a Spanish for Spanish Speakers course that would include more advanced content and literature while focusing on helping Dual Language students acquire the grammar and other skills not covered in the Dual Language Program.  Currently, Spanish for Spanish Speakers I is offered at 7 th grade and Spanish for Spanish Speakers II is offered at 8 th grade at BMSS.

 Dual Language students wanting to take the Spanish for Spanish Speakers class, as well as other full-year electives, will need to create room in their schedule to do so.  Students/parents may choose among several options for doing this.

 Take Technology Application course during the summer.  This course will be offered if 20 or more students register.  Classes will be held from 8:00 a.m. to noon, Monday-Friday, on June at Kendall Elementary School.  Cost is $110, which includes a $10 non- refundable registration fee.

 Pass (90% or better) Boerne ISD locally- developed Technology Applications Credit by Exam (CBE)  Exam will be offered at Boerne Middle School North on June 11 and at Boerne Middle School South on June 12.

 Pass (90% or better) Boerne ISD locally- developed Reading CBE.  Exam will be offered at Boerne Middle School North on June 11 and at Boerne Middle School South on June 12.

 Receive credit for Off-Campus PE (OCPE)  OCPE credit is for students who are making a serious effort to develop higher-level skills in a specific activity that exceed what the school district can offer through the general physical education program (such as dance, tennis, equestrian, gymnastics, hockey, martial arts, and swimming)  Students must be engaged in these activities for at least 5 hours outside the school day during the week.  Students must follow guidelines for applying for credit.

 Parents and students may want to consider current options at the high school level for continuing Spanish instruction: ◦ 9 th Grade: Pre-AP III ◦ 10 th Grade: AP Spanish IV (Language) ◦ 11 th Grade:AP Spanish V (Literature) ◦ 12 th Grade: Non-Spanish credit through language application, such as S.T.A.R.S. mentoring in an elementary Dual Language classroom

 It may be best to think of the end in mind: What college courses will my child take?  If a student pursues Spanish at the college level, it is wise not to have a gap in instruction between high school and college.  If a student sees potential conflicts in electives at high school which would prohibit taking Spanish each year, it may be best to skip a year early in the Spanish sequence to ensure that Spanish is taken the student’s senior year.
