Presentation transcript:

LEAN Product Development practices Itzhak Ben-Levy - LEAN Expert march 2012

LEAN Principles Lean A systematic approach To identifying and eliminating waste Through continuous improvement Waste Something for which the customer is not willing to pay It dose not changes the product or the information It is not done right at the first time

LEAN – Continuous Flow LEAN Manufacturing – Materials Flow LEAN Development – Information Flow

Information flow disruption 1.Each designer Separately see Part of the project data 2.The functional departments have different vector than the project 3.The most important information are among the external interfaces, the subsystems and the functional departments

Lean Product Development Establish customer-defined value Front-load the product development process Create a level product development information flow Organize to balance functional expertise and cross-functional integration Align your project through simple visual communication

Workshops Flowchart Integrated Product Team IPT Requirement Development plan Cost Reduction

Development plan workshop Project manager Facilitator Integrated Product Team (IPT) LPD tools Development plan process mapping Coordination and agreement about activities A realistic development plan

Workshop Scenario  Process mapping of the current designing, installation and integration plan of the project  Identifying opportunities for shortening the lead time of:  Requirements validations  Designing validation  Integrating a new improved plan

Problems & Opportunities Ambiguity about responsibilities The work plan are not realistic Lack of communication among the teams Lack of synchronization among the activities Discover new activities Waiting for requirements The configuration is not freeze Misunderstanding of the critical path Lack of motivation and energy

Applying Workshop in a specific project Understanding project situation / problems. Determining the workshop targets Selecting the LPD tools that will be applied Determining material that has to be prepared for the workshop. Leveling expectations between the project manager and the facilitator. Selecting workshop team members and workshop time table.

Conclusions Organizations needs a methodology, like LPD workshop, to speed up the information flow. The project team will achieve their target goals in a fast and effective manner LPD workshop deals with complex problems, and arrive to an agreed solution in a very short time!
