Publishing Software to create, customize, publish materials such as newsletters, brochures, flyers, catalogs, and web sites.

Start a Publication From Scratch On the File menu, click New Select the publication type you want and then click Create if you are prompted to On the File menu, click Save Select the folder where you want to save the new publication In the File name box, type a name for your publication Click Save

Master Page The master page contains the design elements that you want to repeat on multiple pages. Like slide masters in PowerPoint: When you create a new publication that has more than one page, and you want those pages to look consistent, you create a master page. To set a Master Page Go to the View menu, click Master Page. Notice the yellow background

 Practice Open a Blank, full page Publication Create a Master Page Format the Master Page to have background of your choice. To do this select Background under the Page Design menu while viewing the Master Page Make your selection Close the Master View Save your work as “PubPractice”

Use Home & Insert menu to… Create Text Boxes You can rotate text Create Tables Create Word Art Insert Pictures Draws lines and shapes Add Borders & Accents

Terms to Know Overflow A text box can hold only so much text. If text that doesn't fit into that one box is called the overflow. The overflow will be hidden from you until either you resize that text box or a new text box is made to handle that overflow. TextFit A feature related to overflow text. If you want all of your text in one text box, you should give TextFit a try. On the Text Box Tools Format menu, when you choose TextFit, you'll have four options.

Drawing and Text Box Tools - Format Connect Text Boxes Create a textbox link Break forward link Format Shadow 3D

Terms to Know Kerning Adjusts the spaces between letters so that the spacing appears to be visually consistent. For example, certain letter combinations such as Ta have too much space between them. With kerning, you can adjust the spacing to be closer together (or farther apart), making the letters within the word flow together more smoothly. Tracking Does the same thing, but it changes the spacing between ALL the text characters in your publication (and is available only if you're working on a print publication). Scaling The shrinking or stretching of the width of text characters. You can make it apply to an entire word, a few of its letters, or even just one character. Like kerning, it's a great way to fine-tune the spacing of your characters.

Terms to Know Leading (which rhymes with "sledding") Similar to kerning and scaling except that it applies to line spacing instead of character spacing. The spaces between the line you're reading and the lines above and below that line are supposed to guide your eyes from one line to the next. If that space isn't considered carefully, it's hard to keep track of where you are. You can adjust leading one sentence at a time, but it's more common to adjust an entire paragraph so that it's uniform. Reverse Text White or light text on a dark background.

Adjusting Spaces Kerning, Tracking, Scaling Under Textbox Tools Format menu Select Character Spacing Leading Under Home menu Select Line spacing

Ruler Both horizontal and vertical Helps to get objects precisely were you want them on your publication. Marker move as you move across the page.

Multiple Pages To add a page or multiple pages go to… Insert  Page Choose desired options

Terms to Know Page Navigation These are the thumbnail pages (one for every page in your publication) located to the left of the Publisher window. Each control represents a page in your publication, making it easy for you to go back and forth among all the pages in your publication.

Create a New Publication Based on a Template On the File menu, click New Select the template you want to use for your publication. Publisher opens a copy of the template Make the changes you want to create the publication you want.

Pack Your Publication On the File menu, Select Save & Send, then Save for Another Computer, lastly click the Pack and Go button. The Pack and Go Wizard takes you through each step of the packing process. If you haven't saved your publication already, the wizard will ask you to save it.
