Bats and Bat Boxes What are Bat Boxes? By Sam

Here are some names of bats that live in Washington. Western Small-footed bat Western long-ear bat Big brown bat Canyon bat Silver-haired bat Long legged bat Spotted bat We will be talking about the big brown bat.

Big brown bats diet and size A big brown bat has a wing span of inches. It weighs about grams. The diet of a brown bat consists of insects. It especially likes beetles. The big brown bat’s sharp teeth allow it to pierce through the hard exoskeleton of the beetles. The big brown bat also likes flying insects like wasps, flies, moths, and flying ants. They capture flying insects in flight. The big brown bat can reach speeds up to forty miles an hour while flying.

Brown bats distinctive features The big brown bats are considered large for an American bat. The big brown bat has glossy brown fur. Their lips are fleshy and their nose is abnormally big for their face.

A big brown bat’s habitat, hibernation, and migration The big brown bat lives in the city, meadow, desert, mountains, and all the way to the forest. The big brown bat hibernates in caves, mineshafts, and attics. They will migrate short distances for hibernation in these places.

Bat boxes Bat boxes are a box that is on a post. This creates a habitat for the bat.

Inside a bat box A bat box is filled with bats. A medium size bat box can capture up to 400 bats which is amazing. Bat boxes are a great thing. Bats can eat many mosquitos in an hour.

Why do bats like bat boxes? Bat boxes represent the tree roots that the bats usually live in.
