Pyramids

Building Pyramids: First the outline is marked in the sand. Large stone blocks are cut from quarries. Men drag the blocks from the quarry to the site of the pyramid.

Most men that worked on the pyramid were farmers. They worked on the pyramid during the flood season.

Technological Advancement: After the first level of stones were in place, how did the people get the large stones up to the next level? The people built ramps out of mud, brick, clay and limestone. Large blocks were dragged up the ramp and the next level was built.

It took about 20 years for hundreds of men to build one pyramid. As each level of the pyramid is built, the ramp is built out and up as well.

As the pyramid neared completion, a special block covered in a metallic blend known as Electrum was placed at the top of the pyramid.

What is electrum? A blend of the metals gold and silver. The sides of every pyramid were built to face the four cardinal directions.

Blocks of white limestone from across the Nile were used to cover the pyramid. The blocks were then trimmed to make the outside of the pyramid smooth.
