Vocabulary 1.adobe – a kind of mud brick

2. pueblo – a Spanish word that means “village” and which refers to some Native American groups in the Southwest

3. arid – dry, but not desert-like 4. savanna – grassy plain on which few trees grow

5. gusher – an oil well that produces a large amount of oil

6. refinery – a factory that separates crude oil into different groups of chemicals

7. Grand Canyon National Park – deep gorge in northern Arizona formed by the Colorado River

8. Sonoran Desert – dry area in Arizona where saguaro cactuses grow

9. Saguaro National Park – Park outside Tucson, Arizona where the saguaro cactus grows

18. How do the saguaros take in and store water? Long, shallow roots take in water. The saguaro’s body expands as water is taken in.

19. In what way is the saguaro important to wildlife in the desert? It provides shelter for many forms of wildlife.

21. What effect did the discovery of oil have on Texas? Many people came to Texas, and businesses grew there.
