What are we going to punctuate? Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge A comma is a punctuation mark that is used to separate words in writing. It tells us to pause when reading. The symbol for a comma is:, My dog’s favorite things to do are run, fetch, and eat. CFU Students, you already know that a comma is a punctuation mark that is used to separate words in writing. Today, we will use commas to separate words and numbers. We will punctuate dates and cities and states correctly.

A comma is used to separate the city from the state. A comma is used to separate the city and state, or the full date, from the rest of the sentence. A comma always has one space after it.
