Rwandan Genocide 1994 Caselli Manfredi

Since the country's independence from Belgium their Hutu leaders have always been with a social rivalry compounded by the scarcity of land and its weak economy supported by exports of coffee.

ECONOMICS CAUSES OF THE GENOCIDE The fall in coffee prices made that Rwanda lost 40% of their income on exports. The worst food crisis in 50 years there before 1989.

SOCIAL CAUSES OF THE GENOCIDE The fight for possession of land between Hutu and Tutsi. The population density on arable land reaches 380 inhabitants per km2. The Hutu fear of being exploited, and fear of the Tutsi to be eliminated.

GENOCIDE In 1994 there were a few murders so the police went away and the people were vulnerable. This was well-used by the Hutu that were in the government. The International Monetary Fund, IMF, financed the genocide and while thousands of people were murder the UN didn’t do anything against. RWANDA

The Rwandan Military and Hutus set out to murder all the Tutsis they could capture, irrespective of their age or sex, as well as the political moderates. Hutu civilians were forced to participate in the killings or be shot, and were instructed to kill their Tutsi neighbors. Most nations evacuated their people from Kigali –its capital- and abandoned the country.

It is estimated between 800,000 and 1,000,000 dead people, about 11% of the population of Rwanda and 4 / 5 of Tutsis living in the country.
