Rent is due The winning team members must now “purchase” any desk that their team does not own. 2 Gdolahs per desk. Pool money if you’d like. No jibba-jabba, if you are in a desk that is occupied get up and remain standing. THERE IS A FOOT DRAGGER / JIBBA-JABBA TAX!!! Standers can “buy” empty seats with your Gdolahs.

Time to Reconcile Who among you has the most territory/ money? How did those less rich become that way? What actions did you take to close the gap? What amount of success did you have? Anyone with G1000 or more can “buy” a piece of candy from me. Otherwise turn in your chips.

Rwanda How could this happen?

Background Small African nation Two ethnic groups lived in Rwanda: Hutus and Tutsis Generally lived peacefully until the Europeans came

Background Hutus Majority - 80% Migrated from southern Africa Generally found themselves as laborers and farmers

Background Tutsis Minority - 20% Migrated from Northern Africa (Egypt) Generally found themselves as the elite and political rulers

Background German colony until 1918 (end of WWI) Belgium took it over Put Tutsis in charge Handed out “ethnic identity cards” Education only open to Tutsis Hutus could only be laborers or low level workers

Independence Once Belgium granted independence, Hutu majority took control and persecuted the Tutsis. Many Tutsis fled to neighboring countries

Civil War Tutsi rebel groups formed in neighboring countries and invaded Rwanda Hutu president compromises with Tutsis and agrees to share power 2500 United Nations troops sent to Rwanda to help keep peace

Assassination Unhappy with power sharing, Hutu extremists start planning genocide On April 6, 1995, Rwandan President (a Hutu) is assassinated. Hutu extremists called the Interhamwe begin killing Tutsis.

HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? From the history of the conflict, what did you recognize from our demo? Aside from those connections, there was another powerful weapon: The Media

Do You Feel Bad If You Kill A Bug? Many do not, some do. What accounts for this? Is this much different from killing a person? How? What do you think made it easier for Rwandans?

Radio Rwanda This is how Rwandan local radio incited the Hutus to violence (an act against international law): 'You have to kill the Tutsis, they're cockroaches.' 'All those who are listening, rise so we can fight for our Rwanda. Fight with the weapons you have at your disposal: those who have arrows, with arrows, those who have spears, with spears. We must all fight.' 'We must all fight the Tutsis. We must finish with them, exterminate them, sweep them from the whole country. There must be no refuge for them.' 'They must be exterminated. There is no other way.'
