History Long ago in 200BC to AD500 people called the Mound Builders lived in what is now the Ohio region. In 1825, the Erie Canal is completed. It allows settlers to reach Ohio by steamboat from the East Coast. Disaster struck in the 1930s when half of Ohioans were unemployed during the Great Depression.

Government Did you know that Ohio is the birthplace of seven U.S. presidents? Those presidents are Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, James A. Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft and Warren G. Harding. Ohio’s U.S. Senators are Sherrod Brown (Democrat) and George Voinovich (Republican). In 1803, Ohio became the first state to be carved out of the Northwest Territory.

Geography Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, marks Ohio’s northern border. Ohio’s southern border is marked by the Ohio River, Scioto River, Muskingum River, and the Mohican and Tuscarawas Rivers. Columbus, Ohio’s state capital, is the 15th largest city in the United States.

Economy Ohio manufactures a wide variety of goods, but transportation equipment is ranked #1. Automobiles are assembled in East Liberty, Lords Town and Marysville. Ohio is a great manufacturing state, but it also has a lot of fertile farmland.
