Do now: What is Polio? Polio is a crippling and potentially deadly infectious disease caused by a virus that spreads from person to person invading the brain and spinal cord and causing paralysis. Because polio has no cure, vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and the only way to stop the disease from spreading. The spread of polio has never stopped in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Poliovirus has been reintroduced and continues to spread in Chad and Democratic Republic of the Congo after the spread of the virus was previously stopped.

Do now: Below is a picture in a typical ward for people afflicted with Polio.

Homework Due today - 1 page minimum summary of the first reading. Due Tuesday June 5 th Section 20.3 – Diseases Caused by Bacteria & Viruses. Pages Due Wednesday June 6 th Section The Skeletal System. Pages Thursday June 7 th Quiz on Sections 20.3 & 32.1 Due Thursday June 7 th Section 32.2 – The Muscular System. Pages Due Friday June 8 th Section 32.3 – Skin – The Integumentary System. Pages 935 – 939

New Material What is pathology? The study of diseases. A Pathogen is anything that causes a disease. All known prokaryotic (without a nucleus) pathogens are bacteria Louis Pasteur – First to realize that bacteria can cause disease. Why do people often get infections from a hospital if they try so hard to prevent infections.

New Material Disease Mechanics - Diseases behave in two ways 1. Destroy living cells 2. releasing chemicals that unbalance homeostasis. Damaging host tissue – for example: Tuberculosis, harms the lungs Toxins released – for example: Botulism (food tainted).

Examples The following are examples of common diseases. Lyme Disease Tetanus Strep throat Meningitis

New Material Controlling bacteria: Physically remove Disinfect Food storage Food processing Sterilization

New Material How does a vaccine work? Explain and discuss How do anti-biotics work? Explain and discuss

New Material Viral diseases such as: Influenza AIDS Chicken pox These are unaffected by anti-biotics

New Material Why do doctors insist that the patient use up all of the medicine prescribed? Cause of Superbugs Emerging diseases: West Nile Virus, E.E.E. (Eastern Equine Encephalitis), MRSA, AIDS,… Cover why AIDS is so difficult combat.
