Why the Fat Stay Fat Going for the 3 Increases: Increase in Health, Increase in Happiness & Increase in Energy Strategies for Success in Weight Management By: James J. Messina, Ph.D.

Its in the Cells An individual of normal weight has about 25 to 30 billion fat cells An obese person can have as many as 42 to 106 billion fat cells With so many reservoirs for fat, it becomes relatively easy for fat to accumulate

Causes of Obesity Obesity can be caused by several interacting factors including: Genetics Hyperphagia (eating too many calories) Cleaned up from “overeating”, “binging”, “pigging out” High-fat or high-sugar diet Sluggish metabolic rate Sedentary Lifestyle.

We Diet! So Why are We Obese? Most Americans suffer from hypertrophic obesity in which the number of fat cells is normal, but the size of the cells increases up to 40 percent due to greater fat deposits Contrary to popular belief, obesity in this country seems to primarily be the result of a sedentary Life-style, not overeating

We Diet! So Why are We Obese? Research shows that obese people don't necessarily eat more than their normal or "healthy" weight counterparts. They simply move less and, therefore, burn fewer calories and store more fat. As they store more fat, the size of their fat cells expands.

Why we Need to Change our Lifestyles and Add Exercise DIETING ALONE JUST DOESN'T WORK for most people. Ninety percent of all dieters regain the lost weight within one year 99 percent within five years. Many are trapped by the "yo-yo" syndrome The weight loss industry is flourishing simply because no diet gimmick or special food ultimately is successful at long-term weight maintenance.
