 Raise your hand if you have ever made a paper airplane? Flight  Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table.

 How does a paper airplane get the thrust (push) it needs to fly? Flight  Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table.

 Raise your hand if you have ever thrown a paper airplane in class?  Today that is what we will do. You will be given an Aircraft Carrier Design Challenge that you will research, design, test, produce, and evaluate a paper plane design. Flight  Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table.

Career Connection: Aerospace Engineering Aerospace engineers design aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, and missiles. In addition, they test prototypes to make sure that they function according to design. Bachelor’s Degree required Median salary in 2010: $97,480

Why learn about Engineering?  Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table.

Why learn about engineering?  Engineering offers many choices  From – electrical, mechanical to computer science, civil just to name a few.  The various areas of engineering are all exciting and in high demand.

Why learn about engineering?  Be your own Boss:  Studying engineering provides you with the knowledge and skills to open up your own business and become your own boss.

Why learn about engineering?  Creative:  Engineering lets you exercise your judgment however you want. You'll need to be creative to come up with solutions to fascinating problems and original designs.

Why learn about engineering?  Prestige:  Engineers are professionals who have lots of prestige. Your parents will be proud to say, “My son/daughter is an engineer.”

Why learn about engineering?  Money $$$  Engineers are among the top paid professions worldwide.

We will be using the Engineering Design Process (EDP)  Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table.

The Engineering Design Process: What is it?

What is The Engineering Design Process (EDP)? A 5 Step Process (ongoing) 1. Ask 2. Imagine 3. Plan 4. Create 5. Improve

What is The Engineering Design Process (EDP)? Step 1 – Ask: Define the problem (What is it that you need to accomplish?) Conduct Research (How will you solve the problem?)

What is The Engineering Design Process (EDP)? Steep 2 Imagine: Brainstorm Ideas (Using your research, think about ways to solve the problem.) Analyze Solutions (Which solution do you think will work best?)

What is The Engineering Design Process (EDP)? Step 3 Plan:  Build a Prototype (A prototype is a smaller model that you make to test an idea.) Gather Materials (Organize the materials needed to solve the problem.)

What is The Engineering Design Process (EDP)? Step 4 Create: Follow a plan (After testing and refining the prototype, make the product that will solve the problem.) Test the plan (Conduct testing of your final design.)

What is The Engineering Design Process (EDP)? Step 5 Improve: Evaluate Results (Using your test data, evaluate the results you have observed.) Improve Design (If necessary, make modifications and improve your design.)

What is The Engineering Design Process (EDP)? The Engineering Design Process is ongoing.

Aircraft Carrier Landing Challenge Overview: (Our Problem): Pilots (represented by a paperclip) are returning from a humanitarian mission. They have been dropping food, water, and medicine to people who survived a natural disaster. The pilots need to land their plane on the carrier to refuel and resupply. Our Goal: Standing 12 feet away, land a paper airplane on a 4 foot by 8 foot table.

Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table. Safety:  Throw your plane only in the launching area (standing behind the table).  Do not throw your plane at someone.

Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table. Criteria and Constraints  Steps  Research Paper Plane designs using the websites from our class wikispace.  Choose a design  Make a prototype (1/2 sheet of paper)  Test Prototype (with permission stand in the Airport Testing area - behind table and throw)  Produce Final Paper Plane  Throw only with permission in our Airport Testing area (standing at the table)

Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table. Criteria and Constraints  Materials (in your folder)  Data Sheet (to record results)  ½ sheet of paper (for prototype)  2 sheets of standard printer paper  1 Sheet of Construction Paper I will supply:  1 Paperclip  Up to 6” of clear tape (optional)

Let’s go through the Engineering Design Process

Engineering Design Process Step 1: Ask Define the problem: Design a paper plane with the given materials that will safely land our passenger (paperclip) on the table. Conduct Research: Use the links found on our wikispace to research paper plane designs or you can Google. Click grade level – flight – Assignment 6 - templates

Engineering Design Process Step 2: Imagine Imagine Brainstorm Ideas - Which paper plane designs do you think are the best solution? Analyze Solutions – Narrow your ideas to three choices and choose one to make a prototype. Remember to answer the questions 1 & 2 on the My Paper Airplane Prototype sheet

Engineering Design Process Step 3: Plan Plan Build a Prototype – choose one of the designs (or your own) and build a prototype using the ½ sheet of paper. Test the Prototype in our Airport Area. Remember to answer numbers 3 & 4 on the My Paper Airplane Prototype worksheet Also, Record the results of your Prototype on the Data Sheet

Engineering Design Process Step 4: Create Create After testing the Prototype – construct the Final Design. Follow a plan – Fold your paper plane per the instructions you found on the website or the design you chose. Line up at the Airport Area when ready.

Engineering Design Process Step 5: Improve Improve You have 3 attempts to land your plane on our aircraft carrier. After each attempt, record the results on your data sheet. Make modifications and try again (up to 3x).

Engineering Design Process Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table.  Remember today we applied the Engineering Design Process to complete a Paper Airplane Design Challenge.  Engineers solve problems similar to this everyday.  Engineering is an exciting, prestigious, lucrative career choice.

Engineering Design Process Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table.  By using the Engineering Design Process, engineers can determine the best solution to a problem.  Problems can be solved more efficiently by having a specific process to follow.

Reflect Target: I can apply the Engineering Design Process to create a paper airplane that will land on the table. Reflect (answer the Reflection Questions from our class wikispace.) Using the link on our wikispace, answer the Reflection questions. Select your grade level Select Flight Scroll to Assignment 6 Click : Aircraft Carrier Design Challenge Reflection Aircraft Carrier Design Challenge Reflection I will come by and collect the Prototype/Flight Data Sheet. When you finish answering the questions, you may select an educational game from our class wikispace.
