What I will talk about (For the next 10 minutes or so) (With time for questions) The role of students in primary care clinical settings in the Early Clinical Experience The role of nurses and health care assistants as teachers for medical students in these settings Others will talk about faculty roles 4
Early Clinical Experience Ambulatory experience early in the first year of medical school (starting fall 2016) Student serves a useful function in the clinical setting (meaningful experience) Integrated with foundations of necessary science via Learning Societies 5
Early Clinical Experience Three components –Medical Assistant Rooming patients, establishing rapport, taking vital signs, giving immunizations, diabetic foot exams, etc. –Patient Care Manager/educator Med reconciliation, phone follow-up, smoking cessation, nutrition counseling, etc. –Common Chief Complaints Basic and problem-focused interviewing, differential diagnosis, basic management principles 6
Logistics Students will spend one half-day in a primary care setting twice a week for 16 weeks Start in early October and continue through mid March They will be trained for common HCA/nursing skills in advance by CHM faculty They will be supervised by clinic staff during their time in clinic 7
Potential student roles (after training) Rooming patients Measuring vitals Giving immunizations Making follow up phone calls Providing patient education Etc., etc. 8
Previous Experience with Students in ECE role Students were able to perform reasonably well within a few weeks Presence of students did not slow down clinic flow In many cases students were helpful Students enjoyed the experience Health care assistants and nurses enjoyed the experience 9
