Japan International Cooperation Agency Project on Dissemination of Quality/Productivity Improvement (KAIZEN) Practice for Small and Medium Enterprises in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan 1

Project This is the project To lay down the sustainable basis for improvement of quality and productivity in Jordan Through introduction and dissemination of KAIZEN practices to SMEs The Project is implemented by JEDCO under the technical cooperation of Japan (JICA). 2

KAIZEN An approach for improvement of quality and productivity Developed by Japanese companies through their efforts for improvement over the years Nowadays, widely recognized and adopted even by many non-Japanese companies world-wide 3

KAIZEN, “Improvement” in Japanese Continuous improvement practice based on improvement proposals derived from daily management and operations Participation of the employees on their own initiatives, who are familiar with the daily management and operations Starts with small improvement without significant investment Organized efforts of all the relevant departments 4

Focus of improvement in KAIZEN It varies depending on the conditions of the company, including: Safety Quality Delivery Costs Productivity Human resources 5

Why we recommend KAIZEN practices Sustainable approach giving high motivation to the participating employees, creating - Sense of belonging - Sense of fulfillment Effective approach not only for quality/productivity improvement, but also for vitalizing the management 8

Evolution of quality management in Japan Step 1: Statistical quality control, using sampling and control charts: inspection to prevent shipping of defective products Step 2: Process management: minimize production of defective products Step 3: Quality assurance efforts starting from the stage of product development/design , involving all the relevant departments, including sales department, personal affairs department, etc. 9

Component of the Project 3 years project, consisting of: (1) Promotion of KAIZEN at the individual company level: Program to support “model SMEs” to practice KAIZEN (2) Support sustain the KAIZEN practice in Jordan: Training programs for KAIZEN consultants, and staffs of the relevant government/organization/institutes on KAIZEN guidance (3) Building a mechanism to activate the KAIZEN movement, and step up the level of KAIZEN practices in Jordan: Network building for KAIZEN promotion and dissemination 10
