TESTING OVERALL ABILITY By: Elisabet Indah Susanti

It is used when we want to assess the general language performance. Idea of reducing redundancy. Learners’ overall ability has been estimated by measuring how well they can restore a reduced text its original form.

Cloze Procedure In it’s original form, the cloze procedure reduces redundancy by deleting a number of words in a passage, leaving blanks and requiring the person taking the test to attempt to replace the original words.

Different kinds of cloze Selected deletion cloze Conversational cloze Mini-cloze item

Advice on creating cloze type passage Chosen passage should be at a level of difficulty appropriate to the people who are taking the test. Text should be of a style appropriate to the kind of language ability being tested. Deletion should be made at about every eighth or tenth word. Passage should be tried out on a good number of comparable native speakers

Clear instruction should be devised. Scorer are given the card with the acceptable responses witten in such a way as to lie opposite the candidate’s respond. Anyone who is to take a cloze test should have had several opportunities to become familiar with the technique.

The C-Test Second half of every second word is deleted Candidate do not have to read so much text Puzzle-like nature of the task

Dictation In predicting overall ability dictation has the advantage of involving listening ability. It is not easy to score the. Partial dictation is recommended.

A Practical Recommendation To create your own cloze you can get help from some website. Try cloze test creator http://l.georges.online.fr/tools/cloze.html
