SOER 2010: structure and approach

Structure of SOER 2010 A Exploratory assessment Global drivers Megatrends Uncertainties Long-term policy implications C Country specific analyses Diversity Commonality Flexibilty B European analysis of environm. systems Atmosphere Freshwater Marine Terrestrial Human Synthesis Integrated Analysis (Reflecting – Reviewing – Rethinking)

Part A aims to provide a long-term explorative, cross-cutting assessment of key global mega-trends, that might have implications for the European environment and policy context. To be published in a multi-media format + short report. Part A is targeted at European and national policy-makers as well as opinion-makers interested in broader, cross-cutting and global perspectives. Objectives for Part A

An exploratory assessment of global trends ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Europe in smaller, leaner, smarter?

Part B of the SOER 2010 report aims to provide integrated assessments of key environmental themes. Thematic assessments address state and trends (up to 2020), follow DPSIR logic, are indicator-based,and cover 38 countries. Thematic assessments will be presented as electronic publication, i.e. in an web-optimised pdf format) and are foreseen to be updated regularly. Objectives for Part B

Core elements of Part B SystemsThematic assessments AtmosphereAtmospheric pollution Climate change (mitigation) FreshwaterWater quantity Water quality MarineMarine & Maritime TerrestrialSoil Land Biodiversity SocietyResource use & waste Urban environment Climate change Sustainable use of nat. resources Environment and healthNature and biodiversity CC vulnerability & adaptationSustainable consumption Technological innovationSocio-economic trends Sectoral policies 6 th EAP priorities Cross-thematic ideas and assessments Key drivers & responses Structuring elements: Cross-sectoral analysis Globalisation Link to SynthesisLink to Part APart B assessment

Part C – country analyses Focus on Commonality 6 common issues (air pollution, CC mitigation, nature protection and biodiversity, land, freshwater, waste) Focus on Diversity Country differences and uniqueness linked to key geographical, cultural and socio-economic challenges Focus on Flexibility Highlight regional issues and success stories Country responsibility: SEIS principles, web approach

The SOER 2010 Synthesis is a summary document that includes integrated and cross-thematic analyses. Section 1: Assessing the state of the environment (2500 w) Section 2: Reviewing progress towards improving the SOE (25000 w) - focus: summarise state of the environment - entry point: 6th EAP priorities & regional angles - highlight inter-connectedness Section 3: Reflecting on environmental challenges (5000 w) Section 4: Rethinking environmental priorities (5000 w) SOER Synthesis

4 strategic communication principles Content Format Balance Broad to detailed Geography and user-based Print and web Static and dynamic Parts Derivatives

Agriculture and SOER )Analysis of pressures from sectors is embedded in environmental assessments under Part B 2)Consultancy work provides support on land use outlooks and focused input regarding biodiversity – still to be integrated in relevant assessments under Part B 3)Agriculture is one of three sectors that will be the focus of a cross-sectoral assessment (with annex on key sector trends, including agriculture) 4)Intention is to look at: inter-linkages between sectors (how do they influence each other) potential competition for resources (e.g. land or water)

The SOER 2010 Web Portal Information sharing and consultation on draft documents are run via the SOER 2010 web portal: Thank you for your attention!
