Reading Safe at Home Houses protect us from the weather. They have roofs and walls to keep out the wind and rain. Some are made for special protection against really bad weather.

Reading Safe at Home Igloos are built by the Inuit people of Canada and Greenland. They are made from snow but are actually quite warm inside because snow holds air. When the air outside is minus 45 degrees Celsius, the air inside can be a more pleasant 16 degrees Celsius.

Reading Safe at Home A stilt house is another type of protective house. These houses are built on long sticks over land or water. They stop flood damage when rivers or lakes rise. They also help to keep rats and other animals out. This kind of house is still found in Vietnam, Cambodia, and in places in South America.

Reading Safe at Home Tall buildings can have problems too. How can Taipei 101 survive earthquakes and typhoons? It has a tuned mass damper. That’s a huge metal ball. It hangs from the 92nd to the 88th floor. When the building moves, the ball swings to stop it from shaking into pieces. Lucky for the neighbors!
