The Belgian Congo 1960 Patrice Lumumba in first prime minister. 1965 Mobutu seized control of the country, names himself president. 1971 Mobutu renames country to Zaire. 1977 Katanga rebels try to overtake the country. 1987 Katanga rebels capture the capital and rename it the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
