 1878 Belgium’s King Leopold II became the recognized ruler of the Congo.  Congo is a free state with Leopold as the head.  The Belgian Congo  1960 Patrice Lumumba in first prime minister.  1965 Mobutu seized control of the country, names himself president.  1971 Mobutu renames country to Zaire.  1977 Katanga rebels try to overtake the country.  1987 Katanga rebels capture the capital and rename it the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
