The settlers traveled west and packed their belongings in a covered wagon. The oxen (4 or 6 of them) were very strong, and they were cheaper to buy than horses. Still, the wagon couldn’t be too heavy because it was difficult for the animals to pull, especially up the mountains. It couldn’t be too light either, because the settlers might run out of supplies. There were no or few stores on the trail.

Before the pioneers moved west, they packed up as much food and supplies as the wagon could carry for the 4 to 6 month journey. Crackers Eggs Cornmeal Bacon Dried Meat Rice Chocolate Beans Potatoes Barrel of Water Cow (for milk and meat)
