Warm Up

1. What are some ways that Egypt experienced change during the Middle and New Kingdom? 2. How did King Tut and Akhenaton disagree about religion? 3. Name one good the Egyptians traded for, and explain how that benefited their society. Quiz

Objective: Students will understand the geography of Ancient Greece and the time period that will be covered during this unit.

Greece On a sheet of paper, identify any terms, ideas, or information that you know about Ancient Greece.

Google Maps! Open up Google maps on your iPads and search for Greece. Identify 4 different cities that you see on your iPads.

What can you tell about the geography of ancient Greece by looking at these maps?”

Answer-It’s a Peninsula; it has small islands; it’s mountainous. How might the geography of ancient Greece have affected its people? (Turn and talk)

The coastline allowed for people to become sailors and traders. The mountains would make travel on land difficult.

As a class, lets answer the following questions about Greece; -Is Greece located East or West of Asia Minor? -What influence would the Greek’s location on the Mediterranean Sea have on the way they earned a living and traveled? -What makes the area occupied by the ancient Greeks a crossroad between three continents?

Independent Practice Greece

Group Work Each group will be presented with a timeline- the timeline will highlight the major events that will happen in Greece throughout this unit- and will also highlight major events happening in the rest of the world. Each group will be assigned a question, and they must utilize the map to answer their question. Group 1-What was happening in Greece around the time that iron making skills were spreading in East Africa? Group 2-Who controlled Greece around 2000 B.C.? Group 3-What events in Greece point out that conflict was often a part of Ancient Greek life? Group 4-How many years passed between the year that Xerxes became king of Persia and the year he invaded Greece?

Closure You will be given the opportunity to ask questions based on the map, timeline or class discussion about ancient Greece. As a class we will answer student questions.

Homework Complete an introductory reading on Ancient Greece and answer critical thinking questions.
