AUQA2 Portfolio Faculty of Science

Quality Management in the Faculty of Science The four elements of the Quality Enhancement Framework are: –Governance - –Planning –Management - –Evaluation, reviews and reporting These elements have been built into the structure of the Faculty of Science:

Operational Committees Dean’s Advisory Committee OH&S Committee Quality Review Committee Space Committee Equipment Committee IT Committee Marketing Committee Nominations Committee Faculty Board Faculty Standards and Quality Committee Learning and Teaching Committee Research Committee Higher Degree Research Committee Faculty of Science Forum Academic Committees Faculty of Science Committees 2009 Internationalisation Committee

Portfolio Review: Chapter 1: –Widely acknowledge IT Network problems (outside science) –Inconsistencies across the Web –Lack of governance structure to support IT Chapter 2: –High degree of coherence between the portfolio and what we do. –articulated research mentoring program for ECR and new staff –need research support / technical staff

Portfolio Review Chapter 2: –In the Faculty of Science, research skills support ranges from informal, through project-related supervision and training, to compulsory Higher Degree Research Training units in some, but not all, Departments and Disciplines –Space issues are an ongoing concern

Portfolio Review Chapter 3 –The objectives and implications of internationalisation plans in research need to be carefully thought through International Student Support: –Oral communication and writing skills workshops are compulsory for all HDR students (domestic and international) in the GSE (Department of Environment & Geography) –All FoS departments require HDR candidates to present a seminar each year, which provides training and experience in oral communication. In addition, candidates are encouraged to present papers and posters at local, national and international conferences, and can access HDR project support funds, as well as the MQ PGRF, for this purpose. –HDR project support funds can be used to pay for thesis editing services, where the candidate’s first language is not English. –HDR candidates are encouraged to engage in co-publication of their research with their supervisors, thereby acquiring skills and experience in academic writing.
