THE CATCHER IN THE RYE FINAL PROJECT 1. Brainstorm work: today 2. Rough Draft of Written Portion (typed, hard copy): Monday, November 3 3. Final Draft of Written Portion (typed, hard copy, to turnitin.com) and Artistic Representation: Wednesday, November 5
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE FINAL PROJECT Theme Universal (applies to most people) Arguable (someone can say “I agree” or “I disagree” in response, and would) What the author argues about the subject/topic – essentially, what lesson or conclusion does the author want you to gain from reading their work?
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE FINAL PROJECT Steps to Writing a Theme Statement: 1. Topic: what was the subject/topic of this novel in one word? Example: The topic of Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck is friendship. 2. Lesson: what lesson or conclusion did the author make, or want readers to make, by the end of the work? Must include the topic word, but be an argument about that word (arguable, universal) Example: At times even the deepest, purest friendship cannot overcome the dark reality of poverty.
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE FINAL PROJECT Thesis Statement v. Theme Statement Theme = author’s argument lesson or conclusion author wants readers to gain after reading their work Thesis = your argument How the author’s choices (literary devices) communicate the theme to readers (you)
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE FINAL PROJECT What is the theme of The Catcher in the Rye? Topic: Innocence Theme Statement: To lose one’s innocence is natural, but can be painful. What literary devices have we studied with The Catcher in the Rye? Symbols (red hunting hat, ducks, Allie’s mitt, carrousel and gold ring, Little Shirley Beans record, suitcases, museum, mummies, etc.) Motif (substance use, phoniness, movies/media, Holden calling people up, etc.) Diction (informal, profanity, repetition, copies Carl Luce, etc.) Narrative mode (first person, stream-of-consciousness, etc.) Etc. How have these communicated that “to lose one’s innocence is natural, but can be painful?” Thesis Statement: Salinger uses symbolism to demonstrate Holden’s futile resistance to the adult world, indicating that while losing one’s innocence is natural, it can also be very painful.
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE FINAL PROJECT Write a body paragraph using our example thesis statement. Body paragraph consists of: Topic Sentence (1-2 sentences): Mini-thesis for the paragraph; should indicate what you are trying to prove within that single paragraph [3x] Evidence (1-2 sentences): Blended quote or paraphrase of event within novel; includes MLA in-text citation; gives context for the quote [3x] Commentary (2-4 sentences): ANALYSIS – two steps: Step One: Interpret evidence – explain how the evidence is an example of the literary element you say it is; Step Two: Connect to thesis – explain how this interpretation serves as proof that your argument (i.e. your thesis) is correct Conclusion Sentence (1-2 sentences): Reasserts mini-thesis, transitions to topic of next paragraph.
THE CATCHER IN THE RYE FINAL PROJECT 1. Read through the sample paragraph chunk. Topic Sentence(s): highlight in red. Evidence: highlight in orange. MLA citations: highlight in yellow. Commentary: highlight in green. Conclusion sentence(s): highlight in pink.
