Let’s edit and revise your expository essay. You’re not done quite yet!

Introductory Paragraph Is there an opening line? Is it clearly a quote, joke, or ironic statement? Does it need to be fixed? In the next sentence is the theme discussed? Theme word defined? Concerns identified with the theme that matter to the topic? Does it make sense or does something need to be fixed? LAST: Is there a thesis statement? 1. Does it state the topic? 2. Does it state the two major details why you support the topic?

Body Paragraphs 1 & 2 A major detail? (The reason why you think your topic is true) Followed by theme to thesis OR minor detail (example)? Is your minor detail specific or is it unclear? If you cannot tell what exactly happened in the example, it needs to be more specific. Did you discuss what you think about it in 2 to 3 sentences and explain why it proves your thesis sentence? Does body paragraph 2 have the same? Are you repeating the same stuff over and over? If so, draw a line through extra sentences that don’t matter.

Conclusion Paragraph Remember you only need to choose 2 or 3 of the following. Which sentences do you have: Restate the thesis? Analyze the themes? Discuss the alternative? Answer so what? DOES IT MAKE SENSE IN THE ORDER YOU HAVE IT?

Editing Concerns Do they have punctuation after every sentence? Is there punctuation in every paragraph. Is the first letter of each sentence capitalized? Is each paragraph indented? Are all their verbs in the same tense? Did they spell “lying” correctly? Are there any other words spelled wrong? Do any sentences start with SO, AND, BUT, OR? If so, cross out this word. If they started with a quote, does it have quotation marks. On a scale of 1 to 4, 1 being bad and 4 being awesome, what would you
