Welcome to Student-Led Conferences Today is your chance to experience a “Day in the Life of a 5 th Grader.”

Morning Routines Each morning Mr. Lee picks us up from the basketball courts. We come into the classroom quietly and we say the Pledge of Allegiance and recite the preamble to the Declaration of Independence. Let me recite the preamble for you…. Then it’s time for homeroom reading!

Homeroom Reading This gives us a time to read to self, finish work we are behind on, or work with Mr. Lee. My favorite novel I’ve read to self this year so far is…… At 9:15 we switch for the rest of reading.

Reading Reading takes up a lot of our morning. It is the time when we focus on reading including reading strategies, comprehension, vocabulary, and literary elements. Most weeks we have a “menu” of different things to work on during the week when we aren’t reading or meeting with Mr. Lee. I think I am best at… I think I could work more on…

Our reading textbook I’d like to show you our reading book. I have marked my favorite story, and I would like to tell you a few things about it: Characters Setting Plot Theme or Main Idea

Novel Units When we are not reading out of our reading book, we are reading literature books. This quarter I’ve been reading…….. Let me tell you my favorite part …….

Because we have such a long morning, we need a morning snack. We need a little fuel to keep our minds going for reading. Most days, we take a working snack break where I can have something at my desk. My favorite snack to bring is…..

Writing: After reading we switch back to homerooms for writing. Often times we will do spelling, language, and writing. We have written a lot this year so far. We have written personal and imaginative narratives, an animal book, friendly letters, poetry, and much more. Let me show you what I am most proud of this year so far in writing…..

Math At 11:15 we start math. We have spent a lot of time on multiplication, division, fractions, and measurement. For our math lessons, we often use a math textbook. When we come in we start right away with a warm up and then grade the previous night’s homework together. Mr. Lee introduces us to the concept and usually does examples and practice problems on the board, and then we do a lot of practice problems on our own. Here is my math textbook…..

Recess & Lunch In the middle of math we get a break! Before we head to lunch at 11:40, we get to go out on the playground for recess. During recess, I usually…. After recess, we head into the cafeteria for lunch. My favorite thing to eat for lunch is…

More Math After lunch, we finish our lesson and start some independent practice. When we finish our seatwork we get to work on our menus. Our math homework reinforces what we cover each day. Most Fridays we have our Friday Quiz. Right now we have been working on ….

Read Aloud After math Mr. Lee reads to us. My favorite book was… The theme (message) was… Now Mr. Lee is reading aloud Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 It is about….

Science So far this year in science we have learned about: Force and Motion Matter and Energy The Human Body We will end the year learning about: Planets and Space Let me tell you about my favorite science activity we have done so far this year…

Social Studies Social Studies has kept us really busy this year. Some of the areas we covered were: Geography Explorers The 13 Colonies The American Revolution The Constitution Now we are learning about Westward Expansion Let me what the 3 branches of government are…..

At 2:35 each afternoon we go to block which includes PE, band, orchestra, and general music: On Day 1 and 4 I have … On Day 2 and 5 I have…. On Day 3 and 6 I have….

Questions I hope that I have given you a good idea of what a typical day is like in 5 th grade. I can answer any questions that you may have for me!

Thanks for coming to student- led conferences!!! Be sure to say hi to Mr. Lee if you haven’t already!
