Project Proposal The purpose of this project is to provide an external DC motor for sea boats by using solar power energy. In addition, the system will charge the boat battery during the day time. Solar boats are uniquely suited to transform light energy into movement. Our solar system operates completely independent of any other kind of energy. It works exclusively with solar energy. Because of its independence from any power or energy source, our system is ideal for the backup boat motor. Many people have been lost and dead every year because of lack of fuel or energy. In this project, we will provide a low-cost solution for emergency purpose.

Objective To generate energy in remote locations (the oceans) that are not connected to the electric grid. To design a DC motor system, powered by solar energy, capable of producing power for the external boat-motor. To deliver the maximum amount of energy. To demonstrate the operation of the system.

Introduction Solar powered boat-motor get their energy from the sun. Using electric motors and storage batteries charged by solar panels and photovoltaic cells, solar powered motor can significantly reduce or eliminate their use of fossil fuels, if desirable. 1) Solar Panel A solar cell is a device that converts the energy of sunlight directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect. Using solar panels is a great way to generate clean and renewable electricity to power remote appliances, or even the average home.

2) Solar Charge Controller This Charge Controller is designed to charge deep cycle lead- acid batteries with a solar panel. In starting operation, the panel is connected to the 12 volt battery with the relay off. The voltage of the charging battery or batteries is read by voltage divider R-1. The voltage is dropped to 5 volts or less and inputted to pin 4. The readied command is used to measure the voltage at pin 4. When the battery voltage exceeds about 13.5 volts, Pin 1 goes high and turns on pin 8 of the ULN2803 Darlington driver which activates the relay. The relay stays activated for 5 minutes, stopping the charging and allowing the electrolytes in the batteries to equalize. When the voltage once again exceeds 13.5, the cycle starts again. So, when the battery is charged, the charger will charge the battery for a minute or less and then turn off for 5 minutes. In this way it will be mostly off while cycling to maintain a topping charge. If a deep cycle 12 volt battery is allowed to drop below about 10.8 volts, it can go dead. The red Led goes on to warn if the voltage drops below 11.3 volts which means the battery is very weak. Above that voltage the green led goes on. Above 13.5 volts the relay energizes and the blue led goes on to indicate the battery is charged or mostly charged. It is an important to choose a 12 volt relay that has a higher amperage rating than what your solar panel(s) put out. Before hooking up the circuit to the Picaxe, you will need to calibrate R-1. With 14 volts coming in where the battery is going to be, adjust the pot until 5 volts or less will go into pin 4 of the Picaxe. If you exceed 5 volts here, you can damage the Picaxe chip.

3) Battery The project requires 12 volts battery to connect it to the solar panel also to save the energy that gained from the sunlight.

4) DC Boat Motor Single lever control (forward, reverse, variable speed) with efficient pulse modulated speed control. Heavy duty motor. Smooth direct reversing. 12 1/2" x 10" weedless propeller. 2.6 to 1 gear reduction - permits larger propeller. Battery meter. Dual pass air cooling. Integral steering tube (link arm furnished). Twist grip control on tiller model. Complete installation, maintenance, and operating instructions. Efficiency: Overall propulsion efficiency including propeller is 45.7% for 48 Volt System 400 motor. This is a very high efficiency. Note: E145 instead of E135 batteries are available giving 7% increased running times and 3 lb. increase in system weight per battery. Note 2: Above system weights include charger. For additional battery banks, see batteries.

Conclusion Our external DC motor will provide non-stop energy. Also, it will charge the batteries continuously. The boat will have a backup motor in case of emergency that can stay long, for about 5 hours. Moreover, the battery will be well charged which we can use it in many purposes.
