Homework Spelling/Vocabulary: assigned bi-weekly with 3 assignments a week, tests are every other Friday Math: daily homework is assigned, students should practice basic facts every day Reading: bi-weekly reading calendar to be completed with a current event report or book talk to share with the class – due every 2 weeks  Students should read at least 2 books per month

Internet Safety During student online research parents should carefully monitor websites visited (routinely check computer history) Parents should monitor parental controls on computers and iPads, etc. Regulate student use of social networks and online gaming Discuss cyber bullying and appropriate use of internet

Quarterly Projects Curriculum based projects are assigned once/quarter Quarter 1 Project:  Book Jacket: students are to read a historical fiction book and design a book jacket representing the story  Book Jacket is due Thursday, October 18 th  Project was assigned Monday 9/10

Data Binders Data binders are used as a way to help students organize and monitor their assessment performance They are sent home bi-weekly with students current assessment results Please review with your child his/her progress Data binders are to be signed and returned the next school day

5 th Grade Classroom Management Plan All teachers use the “Rule Book” When students are not following our school rules they will be asked to sign the book Consequences are as follows:  1 st signing – warning  2 nd signing – complete a “Refocus” paper (see attached paper in your packet for an example) paper goes home and must be signed and returned  3 rd signing – lose part of recess & Refocus paper goes home

5 th Grade Classroom Management Plan… Classroom incentives  Best Paw Forward Coupons are used to rewards students when they … Prepare, Practice, and Persevere  Classroom Paw Prints are used to reward the entire class for working together collaboratively. Once students earn 10 Paw Prints they receive extra recess time.

ES Exceeds the grade-level standard by demonstrating proficiency of the content or processes for the measurement topic at an exceptionally thorough level P meets the standard by demonstrating proficiency of the content or processes for the measurement topic I in progress toward meeting the standard N not yet making progress or making minimal progress toward the standard

5 th Grade Family Life & Disease Prevention and Control Unit Family life will be taught in the spring Parents can opt in or out of the unit Unit focuses on …  Emotional, physical and social changes students will face as they enter adolescence  Family values and friendships  Disease prevention and healthy lifestyles Additional information will be given out during our parent information meeting later this year

Philadelphia Field Trip Trip is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 16 th Average cost per student and parent volunteer is about $70 each Parent volunteers are needed, however spaces are limited
