Edgar Allan Poe is perhaps the best-known American Romantic who worked in the Gothic mode. His poems and stories explore the darker side of the Romantic imagination, dealing with the grotesque, the supernatural, and the horrifying. He was also an important critic; his and Hawthorne's writings, for example, defined the form of the American short story, and Poe single-handedly invented the detective story.

Ralph Waldo Emerson was one of the founders of Transcendentalism, an important philosophical and literary movement in the America of the early nineteenth century. Although he was a poet whose works are still often included in collections of favorite American poetry, Emerson was most prominent as an essayist. He was a member of the Transcendental Club and one of the leading intellectual lights of the movement, synthesizing ideas from German Romanticism, Greek philosophy, and Hindu mysticism. His works, especially Nature, Self-Reliance, The American Scholar, and The Divinity School Address amount to a declaration of independence for American letters.
