Portraits of Canada 2002

Portraits of Canada CRIC survey conducted by Environics Research Group and CROP. 2,939 adult Canadians were surveyed by telephone between September 27 and October 16, Results of a survey of this size can be considered accurate to within plus or minus 1.8 percent, nineteen times out of twenty.

Attitudes Toward Government These days, what kind of impact do you think governments have on most people’s lives– a positive impact, a negative impact, or don’t governments have much impact on most people’s lives? Generally speaking, would you say you favor: a smaller government with fewer services, or a larger government with more services?

Health Care: Options for Reform Question (abbreviated): To deal with rising costs, government should… (a) significantly INCREASE THEIR SPENDING on health care; (b) LIMIT THE AVAILABILITY of some treatments or medications; or (c) allow THE PRIVATE SECTOR to provide some services to people who can afford to pay.

Health Care Reform: Better Management? Do you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with each of the following statements: “Most of the problems in the health care system can be fixed if the money we spend now is managed better by the bureaucrats who run the system.”

Kyoto: Support for Ratification As you may know, in 1997, countries from around the world agreed in principle to the Kyoto protocol that calls for reductions in emissions of greenhouse gasses that lead to global warming. Do you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree that Canada should formally ratify the Kyoto protocol, committing it to cut its own greenhouse gas emissions?

Federal & Provincial Governments: Working Well Together? (Figure Shows Those Who Say The Federal and Provincial Governments Have Worked Very or Somewhat Well Together) In recent years, do you think the federal and provincial governments have worked very well together, somewhat well, not very well or have they not worked at all well together?

Which Level of Government do you Trust More to Protect the Programs You Care About?

Confidence in Leaders Can you tell me if you have a great deal of confidence, some, not very much, or no confidence at all in each of the following: a) Political leaders, b) Business Leaders, c) Religious leaders, d) Military leaders, e) Leaders of environmental groups, f) Leaders of groups that protest against free trade and globalization?

Confidence in Leaders ( ) Figures Show Results for “A Lot / Some Confidence” or “A Great / Some Confidence” : Can you tell me if you have a lot of confidence, some confidence, little confidence or no confidence at all in the following persons or organizations…political leaders; religious leaders; business leaders. Source: Environics Focus Canada / Canadian Opinion Research Archive, Queen’s University. 2002: Can you tell me if you have a great deal of confidence, some, not very much, or no confidence at all in each of the following: political leaders; religious leaders; business leaders.

Leadership: An Assessment Do you strongly agree, agree, disagree or strongly disagree with each of the following statements: a) Political leaders often look bad because the news media focus their attention on the mistakes they make rather than the things that they do right; b) Most political leaders do not tell the truth or keep their promises; c) In recent years, the job that political leaders have to do has become much more difficult; e) On the whole, the politicians who are elected in my area do a good job of serving the interests of my community.

Do you consider yourself to be mainly a federalist, mainly a sovereigntist, someone who is in between the two, or someone who is neither one nor the other? Federalists and Sovereigntists – or not? (Quebec respondents only)

Will Quebec Become an Independent Country? (Quebec Respondents Only) Do you think Quebec will probably become an independent country one day, or do you think it will probably stay in Canada?

Health Care: Options for Reform Q11 (abbreviated): To deal with rising costs, government should… (a) significantly INCREASE THEIR SPENDING on health care; (b) LIMIT THE AVAILABILITY of some treatments or medications; or (c) allow THE PRIVATE SECTOR to provide some services to people who can afford to pay.

The ADQ : A Mirror of Quebec Society If a referendum were held today on the same question as that asked in 1995, that is, sovereignty with an offer of partnership with the rest of Canada, would you vote YES or would you vote NO?

Do you consider yourself to be mainly a federalist, mainly a sovereigntist, someone who is in between the two, or someone who is neither one nor the other? Federalists and Sovereigntists – or not? (Quebec respondents only; different groups of voters)
