A learning disability is a problem that effects the “brain’s ability to receive, process, analyze, or store information” A leaning disability makes it difficult for a student to learn as effectively as other students. Learning disabilities are considered a “hidden handicap”

Where do Learning Disabilities come from? Genetic Influences Brain development Environmental impacts

Verbal vs. Non- verbal A verbal disability means that you have trouble with spoken and/or written words. A non-verbal learning disability is when you have a hard time processing what you see.

Can it be Cured? Learning disabilities can’t be cured or fixed it, but it becomes a life long struggle.

Diagnosing Young Helps Since a learning disability is considered a hidden handicap, children learn to build up strategies to compensate the disability.

Strategies Parents must first understand their child’s learning disability, and know how it effects their child Teach the child what their learning disability is and coping mechanisms to get though the problems that come with their disability problems

Dysgraphia Problem: trouble understanding the different sounds that words make have trouble identifying the differences between words Signs: has difficulty writing numbers and words gets the letters in the alphabet mixes up. Strategies: provide their child with a language therapist who would help their child’s writing skills help their child learn to recognize different letters and what sound they make.

Diagnosing Early is Key By diagnosing a learning disability early in a child’s life, their educators and parents can understand the child’s learning style and what resources they should use to help the child reach it’s fullest potential.

It is estimated the learning disabilities cost the government/ society $7.5 billion a year.

Malaysia Weather the children that have mild disabilities should continue to go to the special needs school or join in with the mainstream schools.

Tree House School The school is meant to help students identify desirable behaviours and encourage and display the desired behaviour for the student with learning disabilities to mimic. The students learn skills such as how to communicate and work with others

Tree House School To help their students apply the skills that they learn in math the Tree House School has set up a small tuck shop that students can practice the school’s math curriculum in.
