Students with disabilities are protected by Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA). Please read the following statement to your classes and include the statement in your syllabus and publications. All faculty and staff are encouraged to use the following procedure when responding to requests from students with disabilities. “LAMC students with verified disabilities who are requesting academic accommodations should use the following procedure: ▪ Step 1: Obtain documentation of your disability from a licensed professional. You may contact DSPS to request a Disability Verification Form. ▪ Step 2: Make an appointment to meet with a DSPS Specialist to review your documentation and discuss reasonable accommodations. To schedule a meeting, please call DSPS at (818) ▪ Step 3: Bring your disability documentation to your DSPS appointment. The DSPS office is located in room 1018 of the Instructional Building. ▪ Step 4: Each semester, reach written accommodation agreement with the DSPS Specialist and your instructor. Please complete this process in a timely manner to allow adequate time to provide accommodation.”

What If I am Concerned About Or Object to a Recommendation from DSPS? If you are concerned that the recommendation is not appropriate for your particular class, please contact the signer of the form or Larry Resendez, Associate Dean of DSP&S. The goal is to find a way to accommodate the student in a manner that does not fundamentally alter the essential performance standards of your class. If there is a disagreement between faculty and DSPS regarding an accommodation, there is a process for pursuing the matter; see the LA Mission Faculty Handbook (page 14) at Note, however, that the DSPS professional staff recommendations need to be followed until they are overturned or modified.

How do I refer a student to DSPS? You may ask for students to meet with you to discuss their learning needs. For example, you could say to a student: "I noticed that you seemed to have difficulty organizing your paper. Have you considered using some of the student support services we have on campus such as the Learning Resource Center, Math Lab, or the program for students with disabilities." It is not a good idea, however, to ask directly about a possible disability.

How far in advance must students with disabilities inform instructors about needed accommodations? ▪ Accommodations can be requested at any time during the semester. We usually request 1 week to arrange proctoring and 2 weeks to arrange sign language interpreters. Accommodations are to be given within reasonable time after the request.
