Recruitment AND Retention Meaningful Recruitment Efforts Avoid the “good guy” syndrome Identify the right men to recruit Sell the right things to those men What is Manpower?

Our Purpose Learning to implement strategies for increasing membership engagement and retention in their chapter or colony Being able to use critical thinking to identify areas for improvement in the realm of membership engagement

Membership Engagement Engaged Members care about their chapter and put work into making it better. They are invested in the success of the group. Not Engaged Members enjoy their experience, but are not actively participating in shaping it. Often the majority in a chapter Actively Disengaged Members who, for some reason, have been caused to actively withdraw from their chapter.

Average Engagement vs. Ideal Engagement

Case Studies

Strategies for Improvement Improving engagement necessitates changing behaviors, processes, and systems. Behaviors: How members act. What the cultural norms in the chapter or colony for what is and is not acceptable behavior. Processes and systems: Chapter operations procedures and their systemic implementation.

Making Every Opinion Count Distribute meeting minutes Always follow-up on commitments made Host an effective retreat Have Executive Board retreat AFTER chapter retreat

Improving Motivation A lack of motivation is a symptom rather than a problem The Needs Assessment is a useful tool to combat this

Appreciate Everyone’s Contribution Always praise in public and criticize in private Give specific feedback Have a “Brother of the Week” Award or Gavel Pass at every meeting

Alignment with Mission and Values Hold a Ritual meeting at least once a month Host a reading of Ed King’s Secret Thoughts of a Ritual and follow it with a discussion of Delta Chi’s Ritual. Come up with a local mission statement

Promoting Meaningful Friendships Have standards for Big Brothers Host regular brotherhood events Cultivate chapter unity rather than associate member class unity
