Introducing Hypermedia Laboratory Prof. Seppo Pohjolainen et al. Visit at the Centre for Educational Technology December 2, 2011 Tallinn University

2 Hypermedia Laboratory Information Modeling, Analysis, and Visualization Hypermedia Laboratory is developing and applying the methods of information and knowledge modeling in various domains. These include open knowledge systems and social media, where analysis and analytics provide insights on the structure and dynamics of online communities, such as web discussion sites, newsgroups, virtual organizations, social media services and websites. Projects in the field: OPAALS, Sindi, Openrisk, Campus Conexus II Social Media Enhanced Learning Environments Hypermedia Laboratory is developing technically and pedagogically meaningful methods, models and tools for web-based learning and training. Projects in the field: WesQu, Campus Conexus I and II, MathBridge, TUT Circle, Basic Skills Test in School Mathematics

Hypermedia Laboratory e-Services and Tools Hypermedia Laboratory is involved also in the development of many innovative e-services and tools. Development is done in close co-operation with the customer, especially in the definition stage, when the goals and user groups are initially defined. Projects in the field: Erimenu, Avustajaportti, UCL Simulator Research, Smart Simulators Research Group For the development of our simulated environments, we use adaptive hypermedia, intelligent tutoring systems, competency profiles, visualization and content management. Simulated environments are developed in cooperation with companies and educational and research institutes. Projects in the field: Drilling rig training simulator and training concept, Virtual machine laboratories, Forest Machine Simulator Based Training

Hypermedia Laboratory World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Regional Finnish Office W3C develops protocols and guidelines that ensure the long-term growth of the Web (hosted by MIT, ERCIM, and Keio). The regional offices promote adoption, act as local points of contact, and provide expert services (Finnish Office hosted by TUT/Hlab).

Helps to close the Mathematics gap between schools and higher education in Europe: Mathematics requirements in higher education often differ from what is learned in school The Math-Bridge system can help to ensure a successful start of studies The system provides access to content from top-notch European universities Content is available in many languages: –Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hungarian, Spanish Demo (feel free to register free as a student user) TUT Math-Bridge, Project production server, Additional information available at Math-Bridge - European Remedial Content for Mathematics - December Math-Bridge – Mathematics Remedial Content

Become an associate partner to take advantage of following services: –Full online remedial bridging course or additional opportunity –Content encoding for the institution by professionals –Sharing of already tested content –Local installation or hosting, server management –Help service by professionals –Support and training for end users, administrators, authors –Embedding in LMS (e.g., Moodle) Please, take further steps on becoming an associate partner soon, because the project ends on January 2012 –For details send to Math-Bridge - European Remedial Content for Mathematics - December Math-Bridge Services

TUT evaluation: MRI 2011 Math-Bridge - European Remedial Content for Mathematics - December In fall 2011 altogether 226 students were participating Mathematics Remedial Instruction (MRI) course at TUT 182 students passed the course successfully A data containing pre and post test results of 148 students was managed to be gathered during the course using TUT Mathematics Basic Skills Test Pre test: mean = 4.86, s.d. = 1.74 Post test: mean = 11.49, s.d. = 3.01

Application example: Analysis of the students' community The contents created into an e-learning environment and log data collected on students’ actions can be analyzed and visualized for insights on social configurations between the students. Network analytics

Visualizations of the students' community Network can be visualized for describing its structure and evolution and for providing useful insights on students’ learning habits, e.g. favored reading materials, ways of carrying out assignments, communicating with other students etc. Interlinkages between special competencies. Dynamics of content production; procrastination. Peer-learner network.

Simulator Research -Our simulator research focuses on educational simulators and developing technological and pedagogical solutions for them -Multidisciplinary Smart Simulators research group at TUT -Consists of researchers from Hypermedia Laboratory, Department of Mathematics and Department of Intelligent Hydraulics and Automation (IHA) -Research group is specialised in research and development of simulator technologies, training and product development simulators, virtual learning environments, simulator-aided teaching, and competence development services -Websites: tut.fi/smartsimulators & wiki.tut.fi/SmartSimulators 10 Simulator Research at TUT/Hypermedia Laboratory (02 Dec 2011, Tallinn University)

Simulator Research: Examples 11 Simulator Research at TUT/Hypermedia Laboratory (02 Dec 2011, Tallinn University) Virtual machine laboratory for mobile machine mechanics Virtual learning environment for wood supply and logistics Semi-automatic generation of virtual machine laboratory based on semantic modelling Development of drilling rig simulators, mathematical models and associated training
