ASERL Strategic Planning Responses from Member Survey

Overview 18 of 38 ASERL libraries responded Frequent consensus amongst the respondents, but what about non- respondents? Does non-response imply satisfaction/agreement with ASERL’s programming?

Review of Current Strategic Plan In general, support for existing strategy Implicit/explicit interest in fostering greater collaboration in next 3 – 5 years Ongoing interest in improving access to ASERL collections as over-arching goal Some interest in improving diversity in ASERL libraries as an explicit part of ASERL’s strategy

Review of Current Strategic Plan Some fatigue with ongoing discussions of existing ASERL programs, such as Kudzu and gov-docs, group purchasing, etc. Some interest in divvying-up issues with other consortia, such as ARL, CIC, etc: Allowing the “owner” to address the issue so others can focus on different matters

Ideas for the Future “Inventory” of ASERL’s programming compared to CIC / GWLA peers – interest in developing ties with provosts? Better ties between ASERL and accreditation bodies Foster more opportunities for AULs and others to interact with ASERL counterparts Develop improved library assessment tools

Perceived Benefits of ASERL Membership (in descending order of importance) 1.Networking among library deans/directors 2.Opportunities to learn about emerging issues at meetings 3.Easy access to discussions with other deans about issues 4.Group purchasing for commonly-desired products/services 5.Opportunities for AUL’s & others to interact with colleagues

ROI Right now, no ASERL member expects to receive the full cost of their dues back via savings in group purchases, etc. Most expect some mix of tangible and intangible returns on their ASERL dues expenditure Expectations for tangible returns are expected to increase in future

Small Group Discussions Group 1: Options for / Interest in “deep collaboration” within ASERL? Group 2: Desired benefits from building/expanding engagement with provosts, accreditation agencies, etc? Group 3: ASERL in 2013: What new programs / activities would be most valuable? (e.g., assessment, diversity, others?) What can be cut?
