BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta Life Cycle Thinking approach considers all life cycle phases (raw materials production, packaging production, transports, use phase and end of life) for an environmental analysis of a product or process. Life cycle Assessment is an accounting methodology of environmental impacts generated by a product or process by its life cycle. Studio LCE, Life Cycle Engineering Research & Consulting, is an Engineering Studio based in Turin (headquarters) and Venice (Italy) operating in the field of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), sustainable development tools and eco-design with a considerable experience in research & consultancy services and education programs. From 2004, Barilla G. e R. Fratelli S.p.A. entrusted Life Cycle Engineering for the management of the environmental issue of processes and products by means of the Life Cycle Thinking Approach. BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA research on the main environmental load of the production chain support to the communication strategy (certification of the EPD) whole Italian production have been considered (3 plants; about 480 kt per year) FUNCTIONAL UNIT GOAL OF THE LCA 500 g in blue paperboard box

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta SYSTEM BOUNDARIES 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta DATA SOURCES primary data have been collected for all the main phases of the system: durum wheat cultivation semolina production (milling phase) pasta production (3 Italians plants) primary box production recycled and virgin paperboard production used for the primary pack secondary data have been used for: the production of the fertilisers transport and energy use end of life of primary pack cooking phase they are mainly referred to 2008 they come from the most important LCA databases such as Boustead, Ecoinvent, etc 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta ENERGY CONSUMPTION Whole consumption is about 17 MJ per 500 g of pasta; 10 if the cooking phase is not considered. These data dont take into account the feedstock of the durum wheat 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta GWP – CARBON FOOTPRINT The carbon footprint is about Whole consumption is about 1,3 kg of CO 2 per 500 g of pasta; 0,8 if the cooking phase is not considered. About 0,6 kg are sequestered by the wheat during the growing phase 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta WATER CONSUMPTION The production chain consume 2,4 litres per 0,5 kg of pasta: about the half of the consumers consumption. 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta WATER FOOTPRINT As a preliminary estimation, we estimated also the water footprint of the pasta chain. According the specific protocol available on the calculation included: the process water (blue water) the evapotraspiration water (green water) which is the most important figure. 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT As a preliminary estimation, we estimated also the ecological footprint of the pastas chain. According to the specific protocol available on the calculation included: the crop land due to the durum wheat cultivation; the energy land due to the absorption of the CO 2 generated by the chain; the forest needed for the production of the virgin paperboard used for the primary pack. 2 – LCA OF SEMOLINA DRY PASTA

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta CONTENTS Barilla Group and Life Cycle Thinking 1 LCA of semolina dry pasta 2 Conclusions 3

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta 3 –CONCLUSIONS FINAL CONSIDERATIONS Agriculturals side is the most important in terms of environmental loads. Fertilizers must be controlled The consumers should be involved by the environmental communication for a responsible use of the products. Barilla is joining the EPD system. In the next weeks an open consultation on Product Category Rules will be launched

BARILLA – LCA of semolina dry pasta 3 –CONCLUSIONS THANKS FOR YOUR ATTENTION Massimo Marino
