How many are registrars? How many hold another role within the registrar’s office? To whom does the registrar report at your institution? How many of you have: Been left out of an important conversation? Been presented with a “fait accompli” which you then had to implement? Felt like you were alone in the wilderness?

Maintain records Enrollment Verifications Curriculum planning Implement and interpret policies Register students Transcripts Data integrity FERPA Technology Subpoenas Coordinate/collaborate Hub and Spokes and other duties as assigned…

Worldwide Campus Registrar Reports to the Director of Enrollment Management Prescott Campus Registrar Reports to the Chief Academic Officer Daytona Beach Campus Registrar Reports to the Vice President for Student Affairs Various levels of understanding/experience… No wonder they’re confused!

Our bosses don’t know what we do and when they should consult us Other campus constituents don’t know what we do and when they should consult us Silo operations – breaking down the barriers for day-to-day operations Great ideas in isolation: why didn’t they talk to us first?! Pride of ownership Fear of technology

Our authority has a basis: FERPA Accrediting Agencies Audits Legal/Subpoenas

We have the information to back us up: Numbers, numbers, numbers Data-based decisions Operational needs based on forecasting We are not alone: It’s not just you talking… Registrar list-servs Best Practices Laws and Policies And most importantly…Students! We work with them every day and understand what they want and need…

Strategic Planning: Get yourself invited as a source of information Then become a voice! Show me the Money! Especially for those who are part of Enrollment Mgmt. Enrollment and Retention go hand in hand Student and Academic Support Services = Retention Student and Academic Support Services = THE REGISTRAR! Diplomacy: We’re not trying to be in charge We’re just trying to make those who are in charge look good! We see the problems in the “gray” before others do

New Double Major Policy for the Residential Campuses: Proposed: “To obtain a Bachelor’s degree in two programs, students must fulfill the requirements for both programs. To obtain a second Bachelor’s degree, students must fulfill requirements for the second program and complete at least 30 credit hours beyond those required for the degree already earned.” After much discussion:  “Double Majors” are defined as two degree programs. That is, the student completes one baccalaureate degree in two different degree programs; the student receives one diploma.  To earn a baccalaureate degree in two degree programs, the student must complete all requirements for both degree programs. Requirements for both degree programs must be completed before degree conferral can occur.  Some pairings of degree programs may not be open to students seeking the baccalaureate degree in two degree programs.  Students must gain permission of the appropriate program coordinator to enter a second degree program. The student becomes subject to the requirements of the second degree program as stated either in the catalog in effect at the time of matriculation or in the catalog in effect at the time the second degree program is declared. The questions I asked… The question they said would never be asked… Guess which question accompanied the very first request for a double major that I received? (and guess who I referred the question to?)

We understand how the details fit the Big Picture: We understand the pieces We see how the curricula fit together We have built-in relationships with other departments We are the hub with many spokes! We have no vested interest – we’re here for the students!

We understand the Technology: Technology can help get those ideas off the ground and we’re the technology experts “We won’t let the system determine our policy!” You’re quite right – we shouldn’t, but… Sometimes the technology points us to a better way…

Even if you foster great communication, you still face: Changes in leadership New staff members who don’t know your mission Existing staff members who don’t communicate your mission Changes in law, policy and procedure that alter the message Changes in technology Some days, you just don't feel the love…
